    Clean, caring, engaging dementia-friendly community

I chose Arbor Terrace for my mom and couldn't be happier. The facility is clean, bright and attractive with lovely gardens, high-quality meals tailored to residents, and a lively, dementia-friendly activities program that really engages people. The staff (Cathy, Susan, Gina and the entire care team) are professional, caring, responsive-even nights/weekends-with excellent family communication and strong pandemic safety practices; my mom's quality of life noticeably improved. It feels like a small, homey community, though it's pricier than some options and the layout/wheelchair policy may not fit every need.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews of Arbor Terrace Asheville is strongly positive, with recurring praise for the quality of care, the warmth and professionalism of staff, and the attractive, home-like environment. Many reviewers singled out the staff as the facility's greatest strength — describing caregivers, nurses, leadership, and administrative personnel as compassionate, attentive, and highly responsive. Multiple reviewers named specific staff and leaders (for example Susan Fairbairn, Cathy Nabor, Gina, Lisa) and noted long tenure and low turnover, which families associated with continuity, trust, and deep knowledge of residents' needs. Memory care receives especially high marks: reviewers reported dramatic improvements in residents' mood and quality of life, consistent, daily care (including bathing and activities), and staff who "treat residents like family." Several families explicitly called Arbor Terrace the best place in Asheville for their loved ones.

The physical environment is consistently described as upscale, clean, and well-maintained. Reviewers appreciated bright exercise areas, lovely rotating artwork, an inviting dining room, and a pleasant garden with comfortable seating and a fountain. Apartment options are varied (studios, one-bedroom, two-bedroom), and many found the apartments spacious and comfortable. On-site amenities such as a salon, therapy services, a small library, an activity room, and on-site doctors or organized transportation to appointments were noted as practical conveniences that support residents' daily lives. Reviewers also praised the hospitality shown during tours and move-ins, describing the process as efficient and welcoming.

Dining and activities are commonly highlighted as strengths. Many reviews describe high-quality, tailored meals and a pleasant dining experience, with staff attentive to individual nutritional needs. Activities are frequently described as diverse and engaging, including in-house and outside entertainment, arts and crafts, games, and special events (for example pandemic-era engagement events and festive holiday programming). An active activities director and frequent rotations of programming were appreciated, and several reviewers noted dementia‑appropriate programming and a stimulating environment that keeps residents involved.

Communication and management are noted positively: leadership is accessible and communicative, staff are responsive even outside regular hours, and families felt included and informed about their loved ones. Reviewers also recounted compassionate, family-first decision-making — including instances where leadership acknowledged the facility could not meet a resident's progressing needs and provided thoughtful referrals to better-suited options. This pattern of transparent, resident-centered guidance reinforced trust among families.

There are consistent caveats and limitations to consider. The facility's smaller scale and layout bring trade-offs: several reviewers mentioned small common areas, narrow hallways, and a limited number of first-floor rooms. The facility's size and layout also make it less suitable for some mobility needs — notably a restrictive wheelchair‑pushing policy and comments that it is not ideal for wheelchair users generally. The building can be darker in interior zones because of surrounding trees, and a few reviewers suggested occasional cosmetic "sprucing up" could be beneficial. Location in a busy commercial area of South Asheville was noted as a potential downside for those seeking a quieter setting.

Cost is another recurring concern. Multiple reviewers remarked that pricing is higher than some alternatives, with ADL tiering and an indeterminate duration of higher cost making affordability a consideration. For families balancing budget and level-of-care needs, Arbor Terrace is described as commensurate with its quality but more expensive than other options.

In summary, Arbor Terrace Asheville is portrayed as a high-quality assisted living and memory care community with outstanding staff, strong leadership, and a warm, home-like culture. The combination of excellent, personalized care, engaging activities, attractive surroundings, and good communication makes it a top choice for many families in Asheville, especially for those needing attentive memory care. Prospective residents and families should weigh the facility's smaller footprint, mobility policies, and higher cost against the clear strengths in staffing, programming, and environment when deciding if it is the right fit for their specific needs.
