    Charming facility but slow refund

I moved my dad into this charming, mansion-like independent living facility and have been impressed - clean, tidy corner room with large windows and new carpet, accessible bathroom and good handrails, and a warm, homey staff who are caring and very helpful. Meals are delicious and home-style, activities (bingo, crafts, bonfires/cookouts) are plentiful, and they handle laundry, meals and housekeeping - great value for fairly independent seniors. My only major caveat: the administrator was lacking on move-out, our deposit/refund took far too long (we paid over $40,000), so double-check the contract and refund process.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly positive: reviewers consistently praise Mt. Pleasant Home for its friendly, caring staff, clean and tidy environment, and a warm, home-like atmosphere in a historic, mansion-like building. Multiple comments highlight compassionate and helpful staff who assist with meals, laundry, and housekeeping, creating a welcoming environment for residents and families. The resident community is described as friendly and family-like, and several reviewers said their loved ones are happy there.

The physical facility and living units receive frequent praise. Reviewers mention a charming historic setting with period furnishings, large windows in corner rooms, recent updates such as new carpeting, and accessible bathrooms with guardrails and good handrails. Rooming options are flexible, with private or shared-bathroom arrangements available. Common spaces include a large activity room, which reviewers note supports a range of social activities.

Dining and activities are clear strengths. Multiple reviewers describe the food as delicious and consistently good. Activities noted include bingo, crafts, bonfires and cookouts — evidence of an active social calendar that promotes engagement and a homey atmosphere. These offerings, combined with supportive daily services (meals, laundry, housecleaning), make Mt. Pleasant Home particularly well suited for fairly independent seniors who want social interaction and some assistance with daily tasks but do not require intensive medical care.

The primary concerns raised are administrative and financial. At least one reviewer described the administrator as lacking, and there are specific complaints about deposits not being returned promptly — with long refund wait times noted. One review mentioned a substantial sum (over $40,000) in the context of placement and refund problems; while most reviews are positive about value, this raises a red flag for prospective residents and families to carefully review contract terms, deposit policies, and refund procedures before committing. Another practical limitation is that the facility appears oriented toward relatively independent residents, so it may not meet the needs of seniors who require higher-level medical or nursing care.

In summary, Mt. Pleasant Home is consistently described as a warm, well-kept independent living option with a historic, attractive setting, attentive and compassionate staff, good food, and an active social program. It represents good value for many families and residents seeking a homelike, social environment with assistance for routine tasks. Prospective residents should, however, verify administrative practices (especially around deposits and refunds) and confirm the level of medical or nursing care available to ensure it aligns with their needs.

    About Mt. Pleasant Home

Mt. Pleasant Home sits at 1695 Mt Pleasant St. in Dubuque, IA, and serves as a retirement community in a historic Victorian mansion that's welcomed people since 1874. This nonprofit offers independent living, with three family-style meals a day, weekly housekeeping and laundry, and a friendly staff on duty around the clock. Folks here get to enjoy social and educational activities, and there are raised garden beds, patios, a TV lounge, a library, and rooms with air conditioning and cable or satellite TV. The kitchen will upgrade its old walk-in cooler soon, but right now, it uses equipment from earlier times that works hard to keep food safe for everyone. Residents can join in community events or relax in one of the meeting rooms or garden areas. Staff offer care for elderly women, and long-term care options include connections to home health, skilled nursing, and help with personal care and diabetic needs, all through different agencies, since the Home itself doesn't hold a health care license. The community accepts older adults looking to stay independent yet enjoy support with daily needs, and those with fewer family or financial resources are welcome. There's transportation help, parking, wellness checks, guest meals, and on-site dining with a private dining room, plus Wi-Fi available throughout. Family caregivers can find guidance and resources about long-term care and insurance, and staff encourage friendships and independence by offering activities, check-ins, and support every day. The Home's long history includes care committees, a house man for outdoor work, and additions like the 1940 wing and the elevator from 1965, as well as programs for homeless women and children. People appreciate the safe, personal atmosphere provided, and recent reviews give it a high rating.
