    Elegant campus, caring but inconsistent

I moved my mother here and I'm torn: the campus is elegant, safe, and full of activities (pool, trainer-led exercise, chair tennis and many activity rooms), and the staff and director can be incredibly compassionate and attentive. I also experienced serious lapses-neglect in the first months and after COVID, misleading information from staff, poor housekeeping with dust and lost belongings, and even a resident death with delayed coroner response. Her initial apartment was tiny, beige and depressing; newer units are clean and spacious if you can afford the higher rates. The director stepped up, added activities, and my mother is happier, well dressed and well cared for now. Lovely amenities and caring people, but inconsistent care, early neglect and high cost give me serious reservations.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is mixed but leans positive with meaningful and repeated praise for staff, leadership, and community offerings; however, several serious negative reports create important cautionary notes. Many reviewers describe The Stiles Apartments as safe, welcoming, and clean, with staff who are kind, compassionate, and attentive. Multiple comments single out the director and management for strong leadership and responsiveness — several reviewers note that management instituted new activities or remained personally involved (even providing a personal cell number). For numerous residents and families the environment reads as home-like and comforting: residents are described as laughing, fitting in, and being happier since moving in.

Care quality and staff: Staff performance is one of the most consistent strengths across reviews. Words used repeatedly include patient, understanding, compassionate, and knowledgeable. Reviewers credit staff with excellent care, attention to resident comfort and grooming, and proactive communication. Where leadership is praised, reviewers describe concrete outcomes such as expanded activity programming and engaged oversight. However, a subset of reviews raises serious concerns about care quality and reliability. A few reviewers report neglect, distrust, and very troubling incidents (including a delayed coroner response and allegations of inadequate supervision). These are not the majority viewpoint in the summaries provided, but they are significant and suggest variability in the resident experience — possibly related to timing (several negative comments reference problems after COVID) or inconsistent staffing/oversight.

Facilities and accommodations: Many reviews emphasize newness and cleanliness, noting welcoming entryways, spotless common areas, and pleasant dining spaces. Positive comments highlight spacious rooms in some units, large walk-in closets, and a generally elegant or serene atmosphere. Conversely, several reviewers report small or cramped apartments, a very beige or institutional/hospital-like interior in parts of the building, tiny TVs, and decor that feels depressing to some. Housekeeping is another mixed area: while many call the facility spotless, other families report dust (especially under beds) and lost belongings. These inconsistencies suggest that maintenance and housekeeping quality may vary by floor, apartment, or timeframe.

Dining and amenities: Dining receives generally favorable remarks — multiple reviewers describe delicious-smelling lunches and a pleasant dining area. The presence of volunteers and occasional treats (ice cream) is noted positively. Amenity-wise, The Stiles appears well equipped: many activity rooms, chair tennis and game areas, a heated indoor pool, an exercise room with a trainer, and senior-friendly equipment are specifically praised. Those amenities are tied to improved resident wellbeing in several reviews (residents happier, more engaged).

Activities and engagement: Activity programming is frequently cited as a strength, with many examples (bingo, dancing, art activities, water exercises, chair tennis, and various game rooms). Several reviewers emphasize that management expanded activities and that residents are indeed participating and benefiting. Yet at least one review specifically complains of very limited activities and resulting agitation from lack of stimulation. This again points to unevenness: while many experience a vibrant activity calendar, others feel stimulation is inadequate.

Management, patterns, and notable concerns: Management and the director are generally portrayed positively, and active leadership is linked to improved programming and resident satisfaction. At the same time, the reviews reveal a split in perceived quality over time or across units. Some reviews explicitly call out declines or neglect following COVID, and a few families allege misleading information and untruths from staff. The most serious concerns — reported in a minority of reviews — include allegations of neglect, an unattended death, delayed official response, and claims the community is not truly assisted when required. These are critical red flags that warrant direct follow-up for anyone considering residency.

Bottom line: The Stiles Apartments receives strong praise for a compassionate staff, proactive leadership, good dining, varied amenities (pool, trainer, activity rooms), and a generally home-like atmosphere for many residents. At the same time, there is notable variability: some units are small or feel institutional, housekeeping and personal-property handling appear inconsistent, and a minority of reviewers report very serious care failures and post-COVID declines. Prospective residents and families should weigh the many positive reports about staff and programming against the negative accounts, ask specific questions during tours about housekeeping, staffing levels, incident protocols, and supervision, request references from current families, and follow up on any past incidents or improvements management claims to have made.

    About The Stiles Apartments

The Stiles Apartments sit quietly on the outskirts of Shreveport, Louisiana, and belong to The Glen Retirement System, which is the oldest nondenominational retirement community in the state, and you'll find it on a big, calm, 53-acre campus that feels private and green with landscaped paths for strolling and gardens where residents like to have morning coffee on their patios or in the greenhouse. There are many different housing choices here, including independent living for those who just want to give up yard work or repairs, as well as assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory care for people with Alzheimer's or other forms of dementia, and the design lets residents move from independent living to higher levels of care without packing up or moving far if their needs change.

The apartments range in size and style-one-bedroom, studios, or semi-private options-with features like full kitchens with electric ranges and ice-making refrigerators, patios with extra storage, individual temperature controls, high-definition TVs, and safety features like emergency call systems and automatic smoke detectors in every unit. The staff understand what older adults need, offering things like help with moving around, dressing, spoon-feeding when needed, personal laundry services, and medication support, and there's always someone on duty because the nurses and awake staff are there 24 hours a day for healthcare, emergencies, or comfort. For people with memory concerns, there are specialized memory care services with secure areas, both shared and private rooms for skilled nursing or memory care, and personalized support with activities for daily living as well as connections with therapies suited for dementia care.

Community life keeps people busy and engaged, with a dedicated Life Enrichment Director planning outings and activities every week, so residents often find themselves in an arts and crafts studio, the game room, the Harrell Library which also has computers and the Internet, or enjoying devotional gatherings and movies-plus, there's a general store, beauty shop, and even a pharmacy right on campus. Meals are chef-prepared and set in an elegant community dining room, but residents can also cook in their own full kitchens if they choose, while things like mailboxes, guest apartment rentals for visitors, trash and laundry services, and handy on-site parking make daily living easier. Transportation's offered for weekly outings and the staff encourages everyone to suggest new activities, whether it's a garden walk, a worship service, or a day trip, so there's a lot going on both on and off campus. Residents can keep small pets and enjoy plenty of common and indoor spaces for socializing or just relaxing, and every amenity you'd expect for senior living-from 24-hour security and emergency call systems to a continuum of care including diabetic, incontinence, and high acuity healthcare, plus amenities for both active days and peaceful ones-is included. The Stiles Apartments have a long-standing local reputation for quality housing and caring staff, with a focus on tailored services that let each resident remain as independent and comfortable as possible as their needs change over time, all under Louisiana license #2120.
