    Attractive facility, attentive staff, pricey

I'm very pleased - the facility and grounds are attractive, residents seem happy, the food and activities are excellent, and the director and staff are warm, attentive and consistently go above and beyond. That said, they can be understaffed, and I've noticed interior cleanliness and maintenance issues (sticky floors, unclean restrooms/salon, occasional pests and some broken doors). It feels like home and is very resident-focused, but it's on the pricey side - overall I'm happy with the placement, with those caveats.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across reviews for The Neighborhood of Somerset is predominantly positive, with especially strong praise for the staff, leadership, activities program, and dining. Reviewers repeatedly describe employees as caring, attentive, friendly, and willing to go the extra mile; many comments state that staff treat residents like family and that the team provides individualized, resident-focused care. Several reviews call out strong, energetic leadership and an involved director who supports transitions, communicates consistently with families, and leads timely problem solving. Multiple accounts emphasize that the facility made moves and transitions easier for residents and their families, with staff helping during the process and providing emotional support.

The facility's programming and communal life are frequently highlighted as major strengths. Reviews mention a wide variety of activities—games, outdoor activities, trips, movie nights, game nights, and gospel music—along with regular outings and special events such as family night. Residents and families describe an upbeat, engaging atmosphere where people enjoy living. Outdoor relaxation spaces, well-kept grounds, multiple seating areas for visiting, an on-site beauty salon and barber shop, and private mailbox services are noted as conveniences that enhance daily life. Apartments are often described as pleasant and well-laid-out, with accessible one-level bathrooms and good showers, contributing to resident comfort and independence.

Dining receives consistently positive notes: reviewers cite a nice dining room, delicious food, and a menu with good selection. The combination of appealing meals and social dining spaces appears to be an important contributor to resident satisfaction. Many reviews also emphasize the facility’s cleanliness and efficient operations, praising the overall presentation, atmosphere, and the perception that the community is well run.

Despite the many positive points, several significant concerns appear repeatedly and deserve attention. A noticeable number of reviews report cleanliness and maintenance problems—particularly dirty or poorly maintained restrooms, sticky floors, dead roaches, and unpleasant smells. These complaints contrast with other reviews that describe the facility as very clean, indicating variability: some areas or periods seem well-maintained while others fall short. Related maintenance issues include nonfunctional handicap doors and descriptions of certain interior spaces as dark, depressing, or outdated. Reviewers also mention that the inside of the facility can be in worse condition than the exterior, and that ongoing construction or overhaul (sprinkler work, improvements) has been present and potentially disruptive.

Staffing and value are other recurring themes. While many reviews praise plentiful help and staff who go above and beyond, a number of comments indicate the staff is understaffed and overworked—suggesting inconsistent staffing levels or times of strain that may affect service. Cost perceptions are mixed: some reviewers explicitly call the community a great value for money, while others find it expensive and feel the value does not match the price, likely tied to the variability in cleanliness and maintenance. In short, the strongest and most consistent positives are the people (staff, leadership, activities) and the social/dining life; the most notable negatives are intermittent cleanliness, maintenance shortcomings, staffing strain, and mixed impressions on cost/value.

Recommendation summary: prospective residents and families should weigh the strong, repeatedly noted advantages—caring staff, active social life, good food, engaged leadership, and comfortable outdoor spaces—against the reported variability in housekeeping and maintenance. When considering The Neighborhood of Somerset, visit multiple times (including evenings and weekends), inspect restrooms and interior common areas, ask about current staffing levels and recent pest-control/maintenance work, and discuss contract/cost details and what is included. Many families report high satisfaction and recommend the community, but the mixed reports on cleanliness and value suggest doing due diligence to ensure the experience matches your expectations and needs.
