The community serves people aged 55 and older with assisted living, independent living, memory care for dementia or Alzheimer's, skilled nursing, hospice, respite care for short stays, and even at-home care, doing a little bit of everything depending on what each person needs as time goes on, and they check in often to see if anything needs to change. Brookdale Richmond has private apartments and suites that range from 288 to 372 square feet, offering features like kitchenettes, individual climate control, wheelchair accessible showers, and rooms wired for cable, and they allow pets, so residents can bring a dog or cat along. There are single-room units and studio apartments, with outdoor patios and gardens, indoor and outdoor common spaces, plus rooms for games and activities, a fitness center, as well as a beauty salon with barber services, and guest parking. Staff and nurses are on-site 24 hours a day, and they've got a doctor who can be on call, as well as therapy services for physical, occupational, and speech needs, plus dental and podiatry visits. They help residents with daily activities like dressing, bathing, walking or wheelchair assistance, using the bathroom, grooming, laundry and housekeeping, and medication, and they even can deliver personal items, help with wound care, and offer specialized support for memory care residents using tailored care plans. There's plenty to do, with fitness classes, sing-alongs, evening movies, bingo, board games, education programs, live entertainment, trivia and arts and crafts, plus transportation for errands and appointments, devotional services onsite, and chances for socialization and trips offsite. Meals are provided, with special diets like low fat and low or no sodium if a resident needs, and residents can eat in a group dining room and sometimes outdoors, always with staff checking to make sure each person is eating well. Brookdale Richmond aims to offer a homey, comfortable environment, with extra touches like cable TV, washers and dryers, and Wi-Fi. The building has safety and security features built in, including sprinklers, handrails, and an emergency response system, and there's always a staff member around for emergencies. The facility accepts both men and women and allows some pets with residents, and has a variety of living spaces that aim to provide comfort while supporting independence as best as possible. The community has a current review rating of 3.8 based on four reviews, and often gets feedback for kind and caring staff who know the residents and check on them regularly, and the team there works with residents and families to keep care plans up to date as needs change, focusing on maintaining privacy, respect, and dignity while providing the help that's needed.
Caring, comfortable community with limitations
I moved my mom in and was immediately impressed - the staff are caring, responsive and make the place feel like a small, family-style community where she's safe and well looked after. Rooms are clean and comfortable (some a bit small) with pleasant common areas, patios and easy access to outings and transportation. Dining is generally good with three meals and snacks, though menu choices can be limited at times. There are plenty of activities, on-site PT/OT and short-term respite/adult-day options, but programming can be inconsistent. Management was helpful on price and communication, and overall I'd recommend it for many seniors - just not for high behavioral or intensive medical needs, and I wish they worked with the VA.

About Brookdale Richmond
About Brookdale
Brookdale Richmond is managed by Brookdale.
Brookdale Senior Living Inc. (NYSE: BKD) is the largest senior living operator in the United States, managing over 640 communities with capacity for approximately 59,000 residents across 41 states and employing around 36,000 associates. Founded in 1978 and publicly traded since 2005, Brookdale solidified its market leadership through major acquisitions including American Retirement Corporation (2006) and Emeritus Senior Living (2014), making it the only national full-spectrum senior living company. Headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, Brookdale has topped the American Seniors Housing Association's ASHA 50 list and Argentum's largest providers list for multiple consecutive years.
The company's comprehensive care continuum includes independent living, assisted living, memory care, skilled nursing, and continuing care retirement communities (CCRCs). Brookdale's signature Clare Bridge program, developed over 30 years ago by dementia-care experts, provides specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care through two distinct levels: Clare Bridge communities for comprehensive memory support and the Clare Bridge Solace program for advanced-stage dementia residents. The program is recognized by the Alzheimer's Association® for incorporating evidence-based Dementia Care Practice Recommendations and features secure environments, enclosed courtyards, Daily Path programming with six structured activities daily, and the InTouch technology platform offering personalized brain-stimulating games and therapeutic content.
Brookdale's holistic Optimum Life® wellness approach balances six dimensions—Purposeful, Physical, Emotional, Social, Spiritual, and Intellectual—implemented through signature programs including B-Fit (eight exercise class options), Brain Fit (mental fitness workouts), My Life Story (resident storytelling), EngagementPlus (interest-based connections), Growing Together (collaborative learning), and The Ageless Spirit (kindness and gratitude practices). The Embrace Family Partnership provides caregiver education and support for families of memory care residents.
The company's Brookdale HealthPlus® care coordination model, winner of the 2024 Argentum Best of the Best Award placing it among the top 1% of operators, is a technology-enabled healthcare service featuring dedicated RN Care Managers who proactively manage residents' health, coordinate care transitions, and help prevent avoidable hospitalizations. Communities using HealthPlus report 78% fewer urgent care visits, 36% fewer hospitalizations, and 63% more completed annual wellness visits. The Personal Solutions program delivers hygiene products, medications, and daily necessities directly to residents' doors with discreet packaging and monthly billing convenience.
Following a strategic divestiture of its home health and hospice operations to HCA Healthcare (completed December 2023), Brookdale now focuses exclusively on senior living operations while maintaining its position as the industry's largest operator, committed to its mission of enriching lives with compassion, respect, excellence, and integrity.
