    Warm caring community, minor issues

I chose this place for my mom and have been very happy - the staff are warm, attentive, and treat residents like family; meals are home-style and accommodate diets; daily activities, outings and a small, social community make it feel safe and lively. The facility is mostly clean and updated, grounds are well kept, layouts are walker-friendly, and administration is responsive. A few things to watch - some staff turnover affects continuity and parts of the building need a facelift or have had isolated cleanliness/safety issues - but overall we feel it's a great, caring choice.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive with recurring praise for the quality of personal care, the warmth of staff, and the small, home-like environment at Gardens of Hazel Green. Most reviewers emphasize that staff treat residents like family: caregivers, nurses, and administrators are described as compassionate, attentive, and willing to go above and beyond. Multiple families specifically called out administrators who communicate well, visit residents in hospital or rehab, and follow through on plans—contributing to a high level of trust for many. The facility’s intimate size is frequently praised for enabling close relationships among residents and staff, encouraging social interaction, and creating a sense of community where residents make friends and enjoy group activities.

Care quality and staff behavior are the dominant positive themes. Many reviewers mention reliable, responsive caregivers who provide prompt assistance and personalized attention, enhancing residents’ safety and quality of life. Several accounts highlight that staff listen to family suggestions and accommodate changing needs. The facility’s smaller scale (some reviewers note roughly 16 rooms) appears to support consistent personal attention, and numerous stories and examples describe staff going out of their way—bringing homemade treats, accommodating dietary needs, or participating in community events—to create a warm, family-like atmosphere.

Facilities and physical environment receive mixed-but-leaning-positive feedback. Numerous reviewers report recent renovations, bright and nicely furnished common areas, comfortable rooms, good-sized restrooms, and well-kept grounds with a pleasant courtyard and nature views. These elements contribute to a peaceful, country-style atmosphere and make visiting easy for friends and family. At the same time, renovations are described as ongoing or only partially complete in some reviews, and a subset of reviewers mention cosmetic concerns (worn carpet, need for a facelift) or small room sizes. Accessibility is a clear strength: reviewers note easy-to-navigate floor plans for walkers and mobility aids.

Dining and food are frequently highlighted as strengths. Many reviewers praise home-cooked meals, varied menu choices, desserts (coffee, banana pudding), and staff attention to dietary needs. The dining room experience is generally described as enjoyable and an important social focal point, though a minority of reviews say the dining room is small or that offerings are limited. There are also comments that in some cases there is no dedicated cook—staff prepare meals—and those reviewers felt meal quality rarely improved, suggesting variability in dining depending on staffing or kitchen arrangements.

Activities and social programming are another major theme, with many positive mentions of daily activities, board games, Bible study, field trips, seasonal events (trick-or-treating, Easter egg hunts), and community involvement. Reviewers credit activity staff with creating inclusive programming suitable for different personalities and abilities. However, activity director turnover and long gaps between scheduled programming are cited by several reviewers as a problem, indicating inconsistency in the activity schedule in some periods.

Management, communication, and safety receive largely positive reviews but are not without concern. Numerous families praise the administrator’s hands-on involvement, helpful tours, and follow-up care—reporting strong communication and a feeling that the facility responds to needs quickly. Contrastingly, there are isolated but serious reports of poor oversight: one review mentions an “abysmal director,” failed supervision that led to a resident elopement and safety concerns, and a perception of low value for money in that instance. These negative reports appear to be exceptions but are significant and should be considered by prospective families: they point to the potential impact of leadership changes or lapses on resident safety.

Cleanliness and pest control are generally described positively, with many reviewers calling the facility extremely clean and well-organized. Yet multiple reviews raise concerning counterpoints: moldy bathrooms, rooms not kept clean, reports of roaches/spiders, and an isolated but serious bedbug claim. These contradictory reports suggest that while routine cleanliness is often good, there may be intermittent issues or variability across rooms/time that warrant direct inquiry during tours and follow-up questions about pest control and housekeeping protocols.

Staffing consistency emerges as a mixed area. While staff warmth, professionalism, and high-quality care are commonly praised, high CNA turnover is explicitly mentioned and linked to decreased continuity of care and impacts on trust for some families. This turnover, paired with occasional activity staff changes and ongoing renovations, contributes to a sense of transition in parts of the operation. For many reviewers these are manageable trade-offs against the personalized care and atmosphere; for others—particularly where management or safety lapses were reported—these issues were more consequential.

In summary, Gardens of Hazel Green is frequently described as a small, loving, and well-run community where residents receive personalized, family-like care, enjoy home-style meals, and benefit from a range of activities in a pleasant, renovated environment. The strongest positives are staff compassion, administration responsiveness, social programming, and the overall homey atmosphere. Primary cautions from the reviews are staff turnover (especially CNAs), some inconsistencies in cleanliness and kitchen staffing, occasional gaps in activities due to turnover, and isolated but severe management/pest-related issues reported by a few reviewers. Prospective residents and families would be well advised to tour the facility, ask detailed questions about current staffing stability (CNA and activity staff), housekeeping and pest-control protocols, the status and timeline of renovations, and any recent safety or incident reports to confirm that the typically positive experiences described in many reviews align with the facility’s present conditions.
