    Mostly positive but staffing issues

I had a mostly positive stay - the rehab was excellent, nurses and staff were caring and friendly, the place felt clean and renovated, and communication/activities were good. However staffing was inconsistent: I experienced long waits and unanswered call bells, occasional hygiene/food/diet problems, and a few safety/privacy concerns that worried me.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed and highly polarized: a substantial number of reviewers describe very positive experiences centered on rehabilitation outcomes, friendly staff, cleanliness, and active community life, while a concerning subset reports serious care failures, hygiene problems, and operational issues. The facility receives repeated praise for its rehab services and specialized wings (cardiopulmonary and Alzheimer’s), with multiple accounts noting therapy sessions two to three times daily and measurable progress during stays. Many families and residents describe staff as caring and communicative, management as kind and attentive, and the physical environment as renovated, fresh-smelling, and comfortable. Activities, community projects, and social programming are frequently mentioned as strengths that contribute to resident satisfaction.

Care quality shows a clear split. On the positive side, reviewers often cite good nursing care, effective therapy, and successful short-term rehabilitation stays where staff were responsive and communicative about changes. Conversely, several reviews raise alarming safety and neglect concerns: reports include failure to turn patients for extended periods, a specific incident where a resident was left in waste for more than 36 hours, unresponsive call bells, and instances of improper medication handling. These more severe reports indicate not only lapses in routine care but potential systemic failures in monitoring and response. The juxtaposition of high-quality rehab outcomes with accounts of neglect suggests inconsistency in care that may vary by unit, shift, or patient acuity.

Staffing and professionalism are another area of mixed feedback. Many reviewers praise friendly, attentive caregivers and responsive staff who call families when situations change and answer questions. However, repeated comments about understaffing, long wait times to reach the nurses' station, and difficulty obtaining timely assistance indicate workforce shortages or scheduling gaps. Some reviewers describe dismissive staff responses and inconsistent professionalism, which likely contributes to the perception of variable care quality. Staffing inconsistencies may also underlie operational problems such as unexplained room changes, scarce supplies, and lapses in sheet changing or laundry security that led to missing clothing.

Facility and cleanliness observations are split as well. Several reviewers applaud a clean, renovated facility with good odor control — noting a pleasant, non-institutional smell — and comfortable rooms and communal spaces. In contrast, multiple reports describe unclean bathrooms, pervasive urine odor, and generally horrible conditions in some areas. These conflicting impressions again point toward uneven standards of maintenance or differences across wings/rooms. Positive notes about the Alzheimer’s and cardiopulmonary wings coexist with accounts of tiny rooms and bathrooms, scarce supplies, and limited visitor seating in rooms, indicating that physical accommodations may be tight for some residents.

Dining and nutrition reveal consistent concerns: several reviewers report poor food quality, lack of fresh fruits and vegetables, and failures to adhere to prescribed dietary restrictions. These issues are important because diet directly affects health outcomes for medically vulnerable residents. Transportation and appointment coordination problems were also mentioned, indicating logistical weaknesses in getting residents to off-site appointments or managing external care needs.

Safety, privacy, and security issues are the most serious themes raised. Beyond neglect and hygiene, reviewers mention privacy/HIPAA violations and reports of clothing going missing (interpreted by some as theft). Improper medication handling is also a critical concern that one or more reviewers flagged. These types of problems require immediate administrative and regulatory attention because they affect resident safety, dignity, and legal compliance.

In summary, Riverside Health And Rehab appears capable of delivering strong rehabilitation results, compassionate caregiving, and an engaging community environment — particularly in certain wings and under favorable staffing conditions. However, the facility also exhibits reports of major shortcomings: inconsistent cleanliness and odor control, understaffing and slow response times, serious neglect incidents, privacy and medication handling problems, and deficiencies in food and logistical services. The pattern suggests variability in performance possibly driven by staffing levels, shift-to-shift practices, or unit-specific management. Prospective residents and their families should weigh the documented positive rehabilitation outcomes and caring staff against the reported safety and operational concerns; anyone assessing the facility should ask targeted questions about staffing ratios, incident histories, medication protocols, dining menus and diet compliance, laundry/security procedures, and how complaints and privacy breaches are investigated and remedied.

    About Riverside Health And Rehab

Riverside Health And Rehab, sitting in Charleston, SC, is a 160-bed skilled nursing facility that tries to give solid health and rehab care, and while it's not fancy, it focuses on doing the basic things well, staffing the place with nurses, trained medical practitioners, and therapists who look after folks all day and night, and that's important for people who need constant care. Residents get help with all sorts of things, like medication management, mobility, and daily needs, and there's both short-term and long-term care, so if someone needs wound care, IV therapy, or even something more serious like trach care, they can get it. Specialized programs handle shoulder tendinitis, atherosclerosis, diabetes, tremor, and viral hepatitis, plus they offer cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation in their CardioPulmonary Pavilion, and you can find Dr. Binyue Chang, who's got 15 years of experience, along with Dr. Albert Ford Jr and Dr. Yvonne Davis, who's been helping people for decades.

Rooms come in a few options, like 2-bedroom apartments, shared rooms, or private rooms that are cleaned and frequently checked, many with TVs, phones, air-conditioning, and even electric beds, and sometimes you might want something less furnished or perhaps a kitchenette, so they try to make it flexible, with private and shared bathrooms, too. For folks who have trouble getting around or need close observation, there are secured areas, 24-hour staff and supervision, and emergency call systems everywhere to make sure people don't wander off, get hurt, or feel unsafe. They're there to adjust meals for special diets, keep track of medical needs, and handle transportation, all while offering laundry, housekeeping, a card and game room, a courtyard, library, and even beauty and barber services so people can feel decent without stepping out.

Fitness programs go hand in hand with nutritional guidance, and if someone needs occupational therapy, memory care, counseling services, or help with things like adult day care, respite, or hospice care, they cover those, too, which is good because every resident's situation is different and needs something all their own, and they've got personalized care plans for that. Folks can talk to doctors for free consultations, and there's always someone to check in when needed. WiFi, cable, and internet are available for staying connected, and there's an administrator in Deshaon Davis to keep the place run straight. The staff-nurses and therapy folks alike-are friendly and experienced, and they want to see people make progress if they can, knowing some days will be better than others. Riverside Health And Rehab stays open daily from 9:00 to 21:00 and offers a focused, professional approach that tries to match care and attention with the needs of older adults who need a little more, or sometimes a lot more, help and supervision.
