About Inglis House

Inglis House, founded in 1877, specializes in providing services to adults with severe neurodegenerative physical disabilities resulting in paraplegia and quadriplegia. The 252 residents at Inglis House are all wheelchair users, with ages ranging from 20 to 90 and an average age of 47. These residents have primary diagnoses that include a range of neurological and musculoskeletal disorders such as multiple sclerosis, cerebral palsy, and spinal cord injury.

In 2011, Inglis House began a multi-year initiative to transform its approach to care and adopt a Person-centered care model in a more home-like community setting. Person-centered planning is a process rooted in identifying the individual's strengths, preferences, needs, and desired outcomes, allowing residents to have a voice in decisions that impact their daily lives. This approach empowers residents to make choices about their daily routines, room decorations, menu planning, and household decisions.

Inglis House has transitioned from an institution to a community that values person-centered care – fostering lives of purpose, meaning, worth, and happiness for its residents. Neighborhoods within Inglis House, formerly known as nursing units, operate through shared planning and decision-making by residents and staff, creating a collaborative and inclusive environment. The facility recognizes that younger adults with disabilities often have a wider range of needs, including the need for autonomy, mastery, and creativity, as well as support in navigating personal relationships that may change due to their disability.

As a recognized "Center of Excellence in Long-term Care" by the National Multiple Sclerosis Society, Inglis House is one of a select few facilities in the country offering specialized, long-term care for people with physical disabilities. The skilled nursing facility provides 24-hour nursing care by a team of registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, and certified nursing assistants, overseen by attending physicians and nurse practitioners experienced in managing complex medical issues. Additionally, Inglis House offers on-site diagnostic testing and access to specialist consultants to ensure residents receive comprehensive clinical care tailored to their individual needs. Through a holistic approach that focuses on the entire person, Inglis House supports residents in achieving their goals and promoting independence while receiving the necessary medical and nursing services.
