Eliza Bryant Center is dedicated to providing quality services, outreach programs, and a dignified, compassionate, and secure living environment for seniors. As the oldest continually operating African American-founded long-term care facility in the United States, Eliza Bryant Village was established by Eliza Simmons Bryant in 1896 to care for the elderly African American community in Cleveland. Over the years, the facility has expanded and evolved to meet the changing needs of the community.
The history of Eliza Bryant Village dates back to 1858 when Eliza Simmons Bryant moved to Cleveland and recognized the lack of facilities to care for older African Americans who were in need of assistance. With the support of her community, Eliza founded the Cleveland Home for Aged Colored People, which later became the Eliza Bryant Home for the Aged. The facility underwent several relocations and expansions before settling in Cleveland's Hough neighborhood as the Eliza Bryant Center.
Today, Eliza Bryant Center continues to honor Eliza Simmons Bryant's legacy by providing essential services to seniors in need. The facility offers a range of programs and services along the continuum of care, including skilled nursing care, therapy, adult day care, and senior housing options. The Eliza Bryant Village Manor, Garden Estates, and Amasa B. Ford Lodge provide comfortable and secure housing options for independent seniors, while the skilled nursing care facility offers a compassionate and supportive environment for those in need of more intensive care.
In addition to providing high-quality care, Eliza Bryant Center is supported by a dedicated team of employees, volunteers, and Auxiliaries who work tirelessly to enhance the quality of life for the residents. The facility's commitment to treating seniors with dignity and respect is evident in every aspect of its operations. With nearly 1,000 seniors served annually and a long history of community support, Eliza Bryant Center remains a trusted resource for elderly African Americans in the Cleveland area.
