Sheyenne Care Center has a rich history of providing compassionate healthcare to the elderly dating back to 1917. Originally established to assist poor county farmers and seniors in Valley City and the surrounding areas, the center has evolved over the years to meet the changing needs of its residents. In 1955, Sheyenne Care Center for the Chronically Ill was opened, offering specialized care for those in need. As the demand for senior living facilities grew, the Sheyenne Care Center Manor was established in 1962 to provide a home for elderly individuals in the community.
Through various renovations and expansions, Sheyenne Care Center has continuously improved its facilities and services to better serve its residents. In 1983, the skilled and intermediate care facilities united under the name Sheyenne Care Center, signaling a new focus on comprehensive care for seniors. The center underwent further transformations in 1988 with the addition of two multi-level wings, enhancing the overall look and functionality of the facility.
In 2002, Sheyenne Care Center became a part of Sisters of Mary of the Presentation Health system, further solidifying its commitment to providing quality healthcare services to the elderly. A major construction and remodeling project in 2015 upgraded the Sheyenne Care Center Manor, adding new amenities and features to enhance the living experience for residents. In 2021, the center underwent a rebranding initiative, changing its name to SMP Health - St. Raphael, while still maintaining its dedication to providing respectful and compassionate care to those in its care.
SMP Health - St. Raphael is a 170-bed skilled nursing facility with a team of 250 employees working together to support the well-being of its residents. Services offered include skilled nursing, rehabilitation, Alzheimer's care, special care units, palliative care, spiritual care, and music therapy. Inspired by the Sisters of Mary of the Presentation, the center strives to fulfill the healing mission of Jesus by treating each individual with the respect and dignity they deserve.
