    Mixed care, neglect and positives

I had a deeply mixed experience. Some therapists and nurses were excellent - helpful, communicative, and effective with rehab; rooms were large and discharge assistance was good. But I also saw serious neglect: long gaps with no checks, no showers, bedsores, a fall left unattended for hours, rude/unprofessional staff, poor communication, and safety/cleanliness issues (no hot water, mold, urine odor). There were administrative problems too - paperwork/coordination issues, alleged theft, and state deficiencies. I would not trust this place for a long-term stay.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: Reviews for Diversicare of Haysville are highly polarized, with a substantial number of glowing accounts focused on short-term rehabilitation, therapy outcomes, and individual staff members, contrasted by numerous and serious allegations of neglect, poor hygiene, unsafe conditions, and systemic staffing and management problems. The volume and severity of negative reports — including claims of residents being left on the floor, inadequate personal care, hygiene issues, theft, and critical medical decline — create significant safety concerns that coexist uneasily alongside multiple accounts of excellent rehab and compassionate care.

Care quality and safety: A major theme in the negative reviews is neglect and unsafe care. Multiple summaries report residents left in soiled clothing or exposed to urine and feces, falls that were not promptly attended to, being left on the floor for hours, and inadequate monitoring that allegedly contributed to serious outcomes such as pneumonia or near-death situations. Other complaints include poor wound or bed-sore care, missed showers for days, lost clothing, and inconsistent or absent care plans. Conversely, many reviewers praise the facility’s rehabilitation services — citing knowledgeable therapists, effective rehab programs, and good recovery outcomes (for example, successful hip replacement rehab). This creates a pattern of uneven care quality: when therapy teams are available and engaged, outcomes can be excellent, but routine nursing oversight and basic custodial care are reported as unreliable by multiple families.

Staffing, behavior, and communication: Reviews highlight a bifurcated staff reputation. Numerous comments applaud specific nurses, therapy staff, and management for being helpful, communicative, and caring, with mentions of proactive post-discharge follow-up and smooth discharge logistics. Several reviews name staff positively. However, an equally strong set of reviews describes rude, condescending, or unempathetic staff, allegations of racist or sexist remarks, and reports of favoritism and unfair treatment of residents and employees. Communication problems also recur: families report ignored phone calls, difficulty with discharge paperwork coordination, and inconsistent follow-through. Staffing levels appear to be a key issue in negative accounts — understaffing is cited as a root cause of delayed responses, missed checks, and poor personal care.

Facilities and environment: Comments about the physical plant are mixed. Some reviewers note clean exteriors, roomy private rooms, safe keyed entrances, and inviting common areas such as a large dining/hanging-out area and a puzzle room. Others describe an outdated building, dark rooms cluttered with boxes, mold in rooms, urine odor, and a lack of hot water for extended periods. Dining receives mixed feedback as well; some praise improved, nutritious meals and special holiday offerings, while others complain of cold meals and declining food service. Outdoor space appears limited, with only a small courtyard mentioned.

Administrative and regulatory concerns: Several summaries reference significant administrative problems, including allegations that the facility is 'money-driven,' filing of insurance grievances, and reported state deficiencies. One review explicitly mentions an admissions ban, indicating regulatory action that prospective residents and families should verify. There are also claims of theft and missing money, with at least one allegation of $1800 gone, which compounds concerns about oversight and fiduciary responsibility.

Patterns and takeaways: The pattern from these reviews is one of inconsistency — the facility can provide high-quality rehabilitation and exhibits strong performance in specific departments or with certain staff members, yet simultaneously demonstrates serious lapses in basic custodial care, safety monitoring, and consistent staff professionalism. The negative reports are not trivial: they involve falls, alleged abuse, theft, infections, prolonged lack of hot water, and regulatory attention. This mix suggests fluctuating staffing, management gaps, or inconsistent policy enforcement, rather than a uniform standard of care across the facility.

Implications for families: Given the mix of strongly positive rehab outcomes and deeply troubling safety and neglect allegations, families should approach Diversicare of Haysville with caution. The reviews indicate that short-term rehabilitation stays with engaged therapy teams have produced good outcomes for some, but long-term stays or placements where consistent nursing oversight is critical may carry higher risk according to multiple accounts. Prospective residents and families should verify current state inspection reports and any admissions bans or deficiencies, ask specific questions about staffing ratios and fall-monitoring protocols, tour the specific room they would occupy, check the hot water and cleanliness of that room, and request references from recent families who had similar levels of care (short-term rehab vs long-term nursing). The reviews document both exemplary, compassionate care and severe safety lapses — the balance appears to depend heavily on which staff and departments a resident interacts with.
