    Bright community but understaffing concerns

I'm torn: the community is bright, new and home-like with a strong Montessori memory program, engaging activities, resident-driven delicious meals, and many genuinely caring, communicative staff. However, chronic understaffing, high turnover and inconsistent management have produced lapses-missed care, infrequent cleaning, safety/neglect concerns and worrying reports-so quality is uneven. Families will find excellent, responsive caregivers at times, but I'd visit often and confirm current staffing ratios and leadership before deciding.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in these reviews is strongly mixed, with many families reporting excellent, person-centered memory care while a significant minority report serious safety, hygiene, staffing, and management problems. The most consistent positives across multiple reviewers are the Montessori-based memory care approach, a focus on purposeful daily living and resident choice, engaging activities and therapies, and many instances of warm, responsive frontline caregivers who know residents by name. Multiple families praised the dining program and resident-involved menu planning, describing meals as delicious. Communication with families is frequently highlighted as a strength: reviewers mention regular updates, photos, weekly family webinars, and proactive outreach from staff and leadership. Some reviewers specifically named staff and administrators (including owner Matt and staff members like Renate) as attentive, helpful, and personally involved in residents' care.

Facilities and programming are often described positively. The community is noted as new, clean, and pleasant by many reviewers, with attractive outdoor spaces, patios, and even amenities like a putting green. Families appreciated therapy services (speech therapy), on-time medical transport, and activities that promote socialization and independence. Several reviews emphasize that residents feel comfortable, purposeful, and dignified under the community's Montessori and person-centered practices. A number of reviewers explicitly recommended the community, citing high-quality dementia care and a people-first culture.

However, an alarmingly large set of reports paint a contrasting picture of care that can be unsafe or neglectful. Recurring concerns include chronic understaffing (day and night), high staff turnover, and inconsistent caregiver coverage. Multiple reviewers reported serious incidents: falls, delayed emergency responses, dislocated hips, and infections including MRSA and other infections that allegedly spread during the stay. Additional serious allegations include caregiver abuse or rough handling, theft of personal belongings, falsified incident reports, and unprofessional or even assaultive behavior by management in isolated reports. There are multiple accounts of unsanitary conditions such as roaches in the kitchen, filthy dining areas, urine odors, diapers and soiled items stored improperly in rooms and dressers, and infrequent or inadequate housekeeping. These reports often coincide with claims of poor infection control and inadequate nursing oversight.

Staffing and management issues are a major theme driving negative experiences. Specific complaints include low caregiver pay, overreliance on agency staff, inexperienced executive leadership, and a wellness director who is not clinically trained as a nurse. Some reviewers described periods when nurses were not present on the floor, nonfunctional monitoring equipment, or situations where agency staff were stretched too thin. Several reviewers said care quality declined over the past year, attributing the decline to turnover and instability in leadership. There are also repeated reports that families must remain highly involved and visit frequently to ensure acceptable care, suggesting inconsistent accountability and variable performance across shifts.

Notably, the reviews reveal a high degree of variability. For many families the community delivers compassionate, attentive, high-quality memory care with strong family communication and engaging programs. For others the community appears to be failing basic standards of hygiene, safety, and professionalism. This inconsistency suggests that experiences may depend heavily on the timing of placement, specific staff on duty, and the acuity or needs of the resident. Prospective families should treat the polarized reports as a signal to perform careful, targeted due diligence: observe staffing levels on different shifts, verify infection-control practices, inspect dining and kitchen cleanliness, ask about recent staffing turnover and the use of agency staff, confirm emergency protocols and nurse availability, and request references from current families.

In summary, Sundance Memory Care at Brushy Creek is frequently praised for its Montessori-based, resident-centered programming, compassionate caregivers, strong family communication, and appealing facility features. At the same time, there are repeated, serious allegations of understaffing, neglect, unsanitary conditions, stolen property, infection issues, and management problems. The pattern is one of high variability in care quality; many families report excellent outcomes while others report harmful incidents. Decisions about placement should weigh these mixed reports carefully and include direct observation, detailed questions about staffing and clinical oversight, and verification of cleanliness and safety practices before moving forward.

About Sundance Memory Care at Brushy Creek

Sundance Memory Care at Brushy Creek serves seniors who need extra help due to memory issues like Alzheimer's or dementia, and the building has a secure design so residents can't wander off and get lost, and the staff is always around to make sure everyone is safe. This community follows a Montessori approach, which means folks are encouraged to do things on their own as much as possible and join in hands-on activities, such as gardening, cooking, music therapy, and art shows, and there's always a full-time activity director planning new things to do, from group discussions to yoga, movie nights, karaoke, and even intergenerational programs with children. Staff at Sundance learn each resident's story, so care plans can be tailored to each individual, using methods like the S.T.O.R.Y. method and sensory-driven engagements, and you'll see the building is set up with wide, well-lit hallways, special colored cues for helping residents find their way, red plates for those with macular degeneration, and personalized touches like wreaths on doors to make things feel familiar. Residents can choose to eat vegetarian or kosher meals, help prepare food together, enjoy meals with others using conversation cards, and there's focus on serving whole, minimally processed foods planned by a dietitian for memory needs. Nurses and other health staff are available on site for 12-16 hours each day with a doctor on call, and there's a 24-hour emergency call system, so health needs-from medication management to dressing, bathing, insulin shots, or help with transfers-are closely watched. The resident to staff ratio averages six to one, so staff can get to know each person well, and if anyone is struggling with behavioral issues like wandering or acting out, the team knows how to manage things calmly and safely. The community offers light, medium, and heavy assistance, plus short-term respite care and hospice if needed, and staff can help with incontinence, diabetic care, transfers, and anything else that comes up in daily living. There's a friendly feel to the place and pets like cats and dogs are welcome, and both indoor and outdoor spaces, gardens, walking paths, game rooms, and a fitness room are all available for residents to enjoy, plus attractive features like a salon and barbershop, cable TV, Wi-Fi, kitchenettes, and private bathrooms in the apartments. Visiting healthcare professionals like dentists, physical therapists, podiatrists, and occupational therapists come by, so residents don't have to travel for basic care, and the community handles everything from non-ambulatory care to help with mild cognitive issues. The property is state-licensed for up to 52 residents and has received a Dementia Care Certification from the Center for Applied Research in Dementia, applying Montessori principles, and families are encouraged to visit often, be involved in meals, and keep up through regular updates. Sundance Memory Care at Brushy Creek is part of assisted living options in the Brushy Creek area, carries a community score of 4.8 from Seniorly and a 4.4-star average from reviewers, and stands out mainly for its Montessori philosophy, its attention to every detail for people living with memory loss, and the homelike environment where residents are respected and encouraged to make choices.
