About Huger Mercy Living Center

Huger Mercy Living Center is a hidden gem located in a quiet neighborhood in north central Phoenix. Despite its unassuming exterior, stepping onto the peaceful campus reveals a special place dedicated to providing care for individuals with dementia. Established nearly two decades ago through the generosity of Dr. Raymond Huger, a psychiatrist at St. Joseph's Hospital, the facility was created with the vision of offering dignified and respectful care for residents with dementia, inspired by Dr. Huger's personal experience with his wife's Alzheimer's disease.

The five-acre campus of Huger Mercy Living Center features four identical cottages, each accommodating 12 residents based on their activity and functional level. With a staff of certified nurse assistants, a licensed practical nurse, Medical Director Robert Garcia, MD, and Geriatric Nurse Practitioner Marianne McCarthy, PhD, GNP, residents receive around-the-clock care tailored to their specific needs. Additionally, a full-time chef ensures that residents enjoy nutritious meals that contribute to their overall well-being.

Embracing a social and activity-based model, Huger Mercy Living Center encourages residents to engage in various activities, ranging from music and art to pet therapy. This approach fosters social interaction and helps residents maintain cognitive function, reducing feelings of isolation that commonly accompany dementia. Family members are welcomed to visit and participate in activities, fostering a sense of community and connection for both residents and their loved ones. Special events such as theme weeks, monthly outings, holiday dinners, and community celebrations, like the annual Fall Festival with students from Orangewood Elementary School, further enrich the residents' experiences at Huger Mercy Living Center.
