    Friendly, active community with amenities

I live here and, overall, I'm pleased. The staff are warm, attentive and knowledgeable, the place is very clean and well-maintained, and the amenities feel resort-like (pool, gym, salon, theater) with a nonstop activities calendar. Dining is good, transportation and on-site therapy are convenient, and apartments range from studios to larger units though some feel smaller than others. The location is handy to shops and restaurants but the busy street/traffic can be a drawback; a few residents mentioned occasional odors and concerns about recent rent increases. Despite that, it's an active, friendly community I'd recommend for someone wanting social engagement and strong staff support.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for The Cedars at Woodland Hills are overwhelmingly positive in tone, with consistent praise for the campus, staff, amenities and social life. Many reviewers describe the property as new, modern and resort-like, repeatedly noting the saltwater pool, landscaped courtyards, theatre room, fitness spaces, craft rooms and an extensive activities calendar that supports an active, engaged lifestyle. Across the board residents and families highlight a warm, family-like culture: staff are often described as caring, professional, patient and attentive, with many testimonials that staff know residents by name and go above and beyond daily.

Care quality and staff: One of the clearest strengths in the reviews is the quality and responsiveness of staff. Nursing, front desk, dining, maintenance and activities teams receive frequent commendation for helpfulness, compassion and follow-through. Multiple reviewers specifically call out seamless move-in support and relocation assistance, onsite referrals for movers and estate services, and staff who coordinate transportation and medical visits. On-site therapy (physical, occupational and speech therapy) and outpatient services are repeatedly praised as conveniences that help residents age in place. While most comments about staff are glowing—some reviewers even name managers and employees as exceptional—there are isolated reports of unprofessional behavior (gossip, favoritism) that appear limited but noteworthy.

Facilities and apartments: The facility itself is consistently described as clean, well-maintained and thoughtfully designed. Reviewers frequently cite high-quality apartment finishes — stainless steel appliances, granite counters, in-unit washers/dryers, balconies/patios, and garage options — plus wide hallways, interior entrances in a three-story design and accessible apartment features. Community amenities mirror a resort experience: heated saltwater pool with palm trees mentioned by several reviewers, raised-bed gardens, a well-appointed dining room, theater, salon, and activity/craft spaces. Location is generally praised for proximity to Woodland Hills Mall and restaurants, though some note traffic and a busy street as a drawback.

Dining and meals: Dining is a strong selling point in many reviews. Numerous comments highlight chef-prepared meals, variety on the menu (including daily options and dessert offerings), wine or beer at meals in some reviews, and a social dining atmosphere where residents enjoy conversation. Several reviewers specifically praise the chef, dietitian oversight, and healthy meal choices. That said, a pattern emerges where some residents report a perceived decline in food quality and menu variety after COVID-19 and some mention occasional waits or meal service timing issues (e.g., lines, assigned seating during COVID). Overall, the majority still report very good to excellent dining experiences.

Activities and social life: A major theme is the breadth and vibrancy of activities. Reviewers describe a full schedule: fitness and exercise classes (including water aerobics), art and craft programs, music and choir events, live guest performers, religious services, outings to stores and restaurants, games (bingo, cards, dominoes), quilting and craft groups, and even special events like Mardi Gras and fundraising participation. Many residents report quickly making friends, enjoying group dining, and participating in trips and off-campus activities supported by the community shuttle.

Management, ownership and pricing concerns: Despite strong praise for day-to-day operations and on-site teams, several reviews raise notable concerns about ownership changes, management decisions and pricing. Multiple accounts allege significant rent hikes — in some descriptions dramatic increases or added mandatory services — along with complaints of poor communication or lack of advance notice. A number of reviewers use terms like “bait-and-switch,” “forced services,” and “unethical corporate behavior” to describe recent policy or pricing changes. Those concerns have led some long-term residents to move out and have created anxiety among others. This is a significant recurring pattern that contrasts with otherwise positive comments about staff and amenities.

Maintenance, cleanliness and occasional negative observations: Cleanliness and upkeep are commonly praised; reviewers repeatedly call the property “immaculate” and highlight attentive maintenance staff. However, a minority of reviews mention maintenance delays or unresolved repairs (examples include door issues or mirrors/pictures), and a few report unpleasant odors (urine or nursing-home smell) in certain areas such as an entryway or dining line. These issues appear less widespread than positive cleanliness comments but should be acknowledged as sporadic concerns.

Overall recommendation and patterns: In summary, The Cedars at Woodland Hills is strongly viewed as a top-tier independent/senior living community with robust amenities, a lively social program, quality on-site therapy options and a caring staff culture that makes many residents feel at home. The dominant patterns are positive: modern facilities, active programming, strong dining and supportive employees. The principal recurring negatives center on business/management-level decisions — especially steep rent increases, ownership transitions and associated forced services or pricing changes — plus intermittent operational issues like odors, occasional maintenance slowdowns and some declines in post-COVID dining for a subset of residents. Prospective residents and families should weigh the evident strengths in care, social life and amenities against the financial stability and recent management practices when making a decision. Overall, most reviewers would recommend the community, but the financial and management concerns are important caveats that have affected a noticeable portion of residents.
