Ashland Terrace is a non-profit 501(c)3 public charity and independent community of vibrant older women in Lexington, Kentucky. This unique offering to the greater community provides an affordable option for community living, as resident rent is privately subsidized. The home's mission has remained constant over its lengthy history, focusing on providing a secure, friendly, and affordable home for women aged sixty and older. As a congregate senior living community, Ashland Terrace aims to nurture residents spiritually, physically, and mentally to enhance their retirement years.
The history of Ashland Terrace dates back to 1849 during the Cholera epidemic in Lexington when it was known as the "Home of the Friendless," serving those left destitute by the sickness. Over time, it evolved into the "Old Ladies Home," exclusively housing older women. In 1923, the facility incorporated under that name before moving to its current location on S. Ashland Avenue in 1960. Responding to residents' requests in the 1970s, the name was changed to Ashland Terrace, reflecting a more positive and flattering image.
Prospective residents of Ashland Terrace are required to be aged 60 or older, able to care for themselves independently, and suitable for communal living. The facility offers amenities such as three daily meals, housekeeping and linen services, transportation, daily programs and activities, a beauty salon, on-site library with computers, free wireless internet, and easy access to Ric's Garden, a public cutting garden that brings joy to residents and neighbors alike.
Supporting Ashland Terrace represents an investment in improving senior care and sustaining affordable housing in the community. Donations can be made online, by mail, or by joining the Friends of Ashland Terrace donor society. Individuals can pledge to support the sustainability campaign or make Ashland Terrace part of their legacy through planned or estate gifts. Volunteers are also welcome to contribute by leading activities, playing music, or assisting with housekeeping. All gifts made to Ashland Terrace are tax-deductible and will help ensure the continued provision of essential services to seniors in the Lexington community.
