    Clean caring community; outstanding therapy

I live here and, overall, it's a clean, well-kept community with caring, attentive staff and excellent rehab and end-of-life care. Meals are fresh and customizable, activities (Wii bowling, bingo, programs, outdoor trails/pond) are plentiful, and the outdoor spaces are lovely. Rooms are mostly small studio apartments with microwave-only kitchens and limited storage; some rooms are nicer than others. Nursing is 24-hour and therapy is outstanding, but the place can be understaffed on weekends, communication from administration is uneven, and there's noticeable turnover. It's rural and peaceful, but assisted living is pricey - great care overall if you can afford it, with a few management/staffing caveats.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews of Cedar Community - Cedar Lake Campus reveal a facility with many strong attributes—especially in rehabilitation, therapy, and aspects of daily living—paired with recurring operational and staffing concerns that lead to inconsistent resident experiences. A large number of reviewers praise the staff, therapists, dining, and the campus environment. However, a persistent theme across the summaries is understaffing and variable responsiveness that negatively affects day-to-day care for some residents.

Care quality and staffing: The most commonly cited strength is the quality of therapy and rehab services; many reviewers describe excellent sub-acute rehab, compassionate therapists, and strong functional outcomes. Numerous accounts praise nurses and aides as kind, attentive, and accommodating, with 24-hour nursing available and staff who proactively encourage participation in activities. Conversely, multiple reviewers report understaffing, high resident-to-caregiver ratios, long response times to buzzers, late medication administration, and inconsistent care depending on shift and personnel. Several reviews also mention staff turnover and concerns about how employees are treated by management, which contributes to variable service levels and occasional rude or careless interactions. A few very negative reports allege serious care problems (isolation or drugging), though these appear to be isolated in the context of broader positive feedback and should be considered as concerning outliers that warrant follow-up verification.

Facilities and environment: The campus environment is widely praised. Reviewers frequently cite beautiful grounds with walking trails, a pond, gardens, and wildlife; many residents enjoy room views and outdoor gathering spaces. Indoor amenities noted positively include an indoor pool and hot tub, exercise equipment, a chapel, salon/beauty shop, small store, and a library. Common areas and gathering spaces are generally described as pleasant and well-kept. At the same time, the facility's size is seen as a drawback by some: several comments mention navigation challenges and that the campus can feel too large. Parts of the building are described as older and in need of updating, and room quality is said to vary—some rooms look nicer than others despite similar pricing.

Dining and services: Dining receives strong marks from many reviewers: fresh, made-to-order meals, generous breakfasts and lunches, and flexible mealtimes are frequently highlighted. Several reviews specifically note excellent food quality and customizable entrée options. However, related operational issues have been reported, including long waits for meals at times and variability in service speed—issues that often tie back to staffing shortages.

Activities and community life: Cedar Lake Campus offers a broad range of activities—bingo, rosary, quilting, book clubs, Wii bowling, exercise classes, guest talks, and social events. Many residents report an active social environment with friendly neighbors and opportunities to engage. There are also comments about staff proactively bringing residents to activities. That said, some reviewers say fewer activities are currently offered than expected or that certain programs are not available, which may reflect pandemic-related changes, staffing limits, or program scheduling.

Management, communication, and cost: Several reviews raise concerns about management responsiveness, communication lapses, and administrative issues such as transportation coordination and perceived censorship of negative feedback. These issues contribute to distrust among some family members. Cost is another recurring theme: independent living is described as affordable by some, but assisted living is frequently called pricey, with at least one review citing a figure of about $12,000/month. Affordability concerns are amplified for residents relying on Social Security or state insurance. A few reviewers explicitly say ownership or leadership seems more focused on business concerns than resident welfare; others counter that leadership is caring and engaged, indicating inconsistency in perceptions.

End-of-life and hospice care: The campus offers hospice services and several reviews praise the end-of-life care provided, describing compassionate support and gratitude for the ability to remain in a familiar room during decline. These positive experiences suggest strength in palliative and hospice coordination for some families.

Overall recommendation and patterns: The collective reviews paint a picture of a facility that can deliver excellent rehabilitation, compassionate personal care, and a rich environment for social and physical activity—especially when staffing is adequate and management is responsive. However, recurring reports of understaffing, inconsistent responsiveness, administrative communication problems, and cost concerns mean experiences can vary widely. Prospective residents and families should weigh the strong rehab outcomes, outstanding dining, and attractive campus amenities against potential staffing and management variability. Visiting in person, asking specific questions about staffing ratios, weekend coverage, response times, recent facility updates, and financial transparency, and speaking with current residents and families will help determine whether Cedar Lake Campus is the right match for an individual’s needs.
