    Compassionate professional memory-care highly recommended

I toured Highgate and moved my mom in - best decision I've made. The staff are compassionate, professional, and treat residents like family; the memory-care team is highly trained and calm under pressure. The community is clean, home-like and safe, with excellent food, varied activities, and strong aging-in-place/couples care options. Management communicates well, transitions are seamless, requests are handled quickly - my mom is happy and I would confidently put my own parents here.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Highgate Senior Living - Vancouver are strongly positive and consistently emphasize high-quality, compassionate care delivered by a cohesive, family-like staff. Across dozens of summaries, families and residents repeatedly highlight attentive caregivers, strong memory-care expertise, proactive nursing oversight, and an activities program that keeps residents engaged. Many reviewers explicitly state that staff treat residents like family, that the community provides peace of mind, and that the transition into Highgate was seamless and supportive.

Care quality and clinical oversight: Multiple reviews emphasize licensed nursing presence, medication management, and a dementia-focused approach with trained memory-care teams. The community is credited with round-the-clock care, fall-protection monitoring, frequent nurse attendance, and tailored care plans that follow residents through disease progression. Families note quick responses to health needs, timely communication from staff (including named staff and managers), and coordinated transitions to hospice when needed. These comments point to a reliable clinical backbone that reassures families and supports residents with complex needs.

Staff, culture and management: The dominant theme is staff excellence. Reviewers praise direct care staff, housekeeping, dining staff, activities coordinators, and executive leadership by name (e.g., Autumn, Mike, Jennifer and others). The culture is described as warm, nurturing, and team-oriented, with many anecdotes of staff going above and beyond — painting apartments, accommodating pets, personalized attention, and emotional support during difficult moments. Leadership is noted as accessible and engaged, with many reports of directors and managers knowing residents by name and being responsive to family concerns. That said, a minority of reviews raise concerns about turnover and local management; one review alleges a hostile work environment and malpractice, so while praise is overwhelming, there are isolated but significant negative reports that warrant attention.

Activities, social life and community engagement: Highgate is repeatedly lauded for its activities program: live music, sing-alongs, exercise classes, games, outings, themed family events (St. Patrick's Day, Easter egg hunts, Western Night), tea-time socials, weekly happy hours, and van trips. Reviewers note an active, upbeat atmosphere, strong engagement by residents, and a capable activities coordinator who creates varied programming. The small community size is often framed positively — it supports close friendships and personalized activities — though a few reviewers wanted more or a dedicated activity room for additional programming.

Dining and nutrition: Food quality is a strong positive. Many reviewers praise the chef and nutritionist-guided menu, noting balanced, customizable meals and measurable improvements in residents' weight and health. Dining is social (tea-time, bistro/hallway options), and families appreciate open menu discussions and flexibility. A few comments mention mealtime delays during times of staffing pressure and regimented dining times in some areas, but overall dining receives high marks.

Facilities, layout and amenities: The property is described as clean, bright, and well maintained with attractive decor, cheerful common spaces, and pleasant grounds including patios and gardens. Options range from smaller memory-care suites to villas and two-bedroom homes for independent living. Reviewers valued the fenced-in campus and easy family visits. Criticisms include some older or smaller rooms, limited in-unit kitchen options (microwave-only in some apartments), and a smaller overall amenity set compared with larger communities. Practical concerns about parking (distance to building in winter) appear in multiple summaries.

Safety and notable incidents: Safety and supervision are commonly praised — fall-protection monitoring, quick response times, and dependable medication management. However, reviewers also mentioned at least one serious fall that resulted in a resident's passing and isolated mentions of hygiene and safety issues. While the overwhelming trend is confidence in staff safety protocols, these isolated reports indicate risks that prospective families should discuss during tours.

Patterns of concern: The main negative patterns are staffing-related: occasional shortages, longer mealtimes, and comments about turnover or management instability. There is also the single, prominent allegation of hostile work environment and malpractice which contrasts sharply with the large volume of positive reports; such an allegation would merit direct follow-up by prospective residents and families. Other recurring but less severe drawbacks include limited amenities relative to larger communities, some smaller room sizes, and weather/parking inconveniences.

Recommendation and takeaways: Highgate Senior Living - Vancouver presents as a small, well-kept community with a strong emphasis on compassionate, personalized care and an excellent activities/dining program. It appears particularly strong for residents needing memory care or a high-touch assisted living environment where staff continuity and family communication are priorities. Prospective residents and families should tour the community, ask about current staffing levels and turnover, inquire in detail about any safety incidents and how they were addressed, and verify room layouts/amenities for their specific needs (in-unit kitchen size, parking accessibility, and availability of private dining or activity space). Overall, the reviews portray Highgate as a community with many devoted caregivers, strong clinical oversight, and an engaged social environment — with a few operational caveats to explore during the decision process.
