    Beautiful campus, management and care

I'm torn: the campus is beautiful, rooms and dining are spacious and bright, and many caregivers were warm, attentive, and ran great activities - I saw genuine kindness and good meals at times. But management is a major problem: favoritism, high turnover, a toxic workplace, inconsistent nursing/medication practices, slow emergency response, and security/cleaning lapses in some apartments. Pricing is high with reports of surprise/excessive damage charges, so read the rental contract carefully. In short: lovely facility and wonderful frontline staff, but systemic management and care-quality issues made me hesitate to recommend (avoid the new memory-care addition).

    Summary review

Overall impression: The reviews for Orchard Crest Retirement Community are strongly mixed, with many families and residents reporting exceptional, heartfelt care and a beautiful, activity-rich campus, while a significant minority report troubling lapses in management, medication handling, cleanliness, staffing consistency, and billing practices. Positive comments often focus on the personal interactions and atmosphere — warm, caring staff who know residents by name, restaurant-style dining, extensive amenities and activities, and a well-maintained, resort-like facility. Negative comments cluster around leadership and operational weaknesses that create uneven experiences from unit to unit and shift to shift.

Care quality and staff: A frequent theme is that many direct-care staff are attentive, compassionate, and go above and beyond — several reviewers said staff treated residents with dignity, provided gentle assistance, and offered peace of mind to families. Specific staff members were singled out positively (for example, Jackie and Brianna in reviews) as informative and especially kind. However, there are repeated reports of inconsistent caregiving: high turnover (one review cited four caregivers in six months), personnel shortages on weekends, delays or omissions in medication administration, and isolated incidents of neglect (residents not showered, teeth not brushed, apartments left filthy). There are also reports of instances where emergency responses were slow and a narcotic pill was found on the floor — concrete safety concerns that families should investigate directly when touring.

Facilities, amenities and activities: The campus itself is repeatedly praised — new and modern buildings, bright and clean common areas, attractive lobbies, and a memory-care addition described as especially beautiful. Units are described as spacious (large one- and two-bedroom layouts, some with balconies), and the community offers strong onsite amenities: pool, gym, theater, salon, convenience store, coffee stand, and robust programmed activities (bingo, arts & crafts, movie nights, Wii bowling, wine-and-cheese nights, walking/exercise programs). Transportation services (scheduled scenic drives and doctor transport) and a full dining program (three meals per day, buffet and menu choices) are frequently noted as major strengths that enhance residents' quality of life.

Dining and nutrition: Dining impressions are polarized. Many reviewers praise outstanding food, a wide variety of meals, daily choices and attention to dietary needs — one family credited the community for their loved one gaining weight and being healthier. Other reviewers, however, describe inedible meals, missing meals for memory-care residents, raw eggs or leftovers being served, and inconsistency in kitchen operations (e.g., reports of kitchen manager being on vacation and no coverage). These conflicting reports indicate that dining quality may vary by dining room, time period, or staff on duty.

Management, communication and workplace culture: A major source of concern runs through many negative reviews: management is described as unresponsive or dismissive, with an administrator characterized as "stuck-up" in one report and a nursing director accused of talking down to residents. HR and hiring practices were criticized, with accusations of favoritism, unprofessional behavior, and a toxic workplace culture that likely contributes to turnover and inconsistent care. Several reviews warn about price increases, high monthly rates (one review cited over $4,000/month), and excessive, sometimes surprising damage charges at move-out (laminate countertop charges, extensive carpeting fees), advising caution when signing the rental agreement. Some reviewers also referenced regulatory scrutiny (a late state survey) as an additional warning sign.

Safety, security and reliability: There are isolated but serious reports that raise safety concerns: medication mismanagement, a narcotic pill left on the floor, unaddressed fall injuries, theft ("sticky fingers"), and reports of meals not being delivered to some memory-care residents. Weekend staffing gaps and slow emergency response time were also flagged. These issues are not universal across reviews, but their recurrence suggests families should explicitly ask about staffing ratios, medication protocols, weekend coverage, security measures, and emergency procedures during any in-person visit.

Patterns and variability: The reviews illustrate a clear pattern: many residents and families have excellent experiences centered on compassionate frontline caregivers, a lively activities calendar, strong amenities, and attractive living spaces. At the same time, a non-trivial subset of reviewers report systemic operational problems (management response, HR, billing practices, medication and hygiene lapses) that materially affect resident safety and satisfaction. The contrast is stark in places: the same community is called the "most beautiful memory care in Spokane" by some and "worst facility" by others. This indicates considerable inconsistency — likely influenced by staffing changes, leadership priorities, and possible recent declines or turnover.

Recommendation for families: Given the mix of strong positive elements and serious negative reports, prospective residents and their families should (1) tour multiple times (including a mealtime and a weekend) to assess consistency; (2) ask directly about current staffing levels, staff turnover rates, and weekend/holiday coverage; (3) request written medication-administration and emergency-response protocols; (4) review the residency agreement carefully for damage fees and price escalation clauses and insist on clear definitions; (5) talk with current residents and families (if possible) and ask for examples of both positive and negative recent experiences; and (6) verify any regulatory findings or late surveys with state inspection reports. In short, Orchard Crest offers many real strengths (staff warmth, amenities, dining options, a beautiful campus), but the variability and recurring operational complaints warrant thorough due diligence before moving a loved one in.
