    Friendly caring staff; excellent community

My dad has lived here for years and we couldn't be happier. The staff are unfailingly friendly, caring and professional with excellent 24/7 health/safety support; management and maintenance are responsive. The community is clean, homey and well-maintained with lovely grounds (koi pond, gazebo), an elegant dining room and great food, plus a full calendar of activities - highly recommended.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with repeated emphasis on a warm, home-like atmosphere, consistently clean and well-maintained facilities, and very friendly, caring staff. Reviewers frequently single out staff responsiveness — both caregiving and maintenance — and describe staff as patient, courteous, and professional. Multiple family members and long-term residents report high satisfaction, quick responses to calls, and a daily environment where residents appear engaged and content.

Activities and social life are highlighted as a major strength. The activity calendar is described as extensive and varied, including bingo, singing, Bible studies, knitting, arts & crafts, tournaments, camera club meetings, nightly movies, and organized outings with transportation. Reviewers noted that the activities director is creative and that there are ample opportunities for residents to be involved, which contributes to a lively, engaged community. The presence of on-site clubs (camera club), seasonal and holiday decorations, and special events (outdoor events during COVID, turkey table for Thanksgiving) reinforce an active, connected resident culture.

Facilities and amenities receive regular praise. The dining experience is repeatedly described as very good — reviewers mention an upper-end dining feel, a popular salad bar, clean and inviting dining hall with large windows overlooking the yard, and a pleasant dining atmosphere. Common areas are convenient and comfortable, with a roomy lobby, common areas on each floor, a lovely library, beauty salon, and gathering spaces used for activities and events. Outdoor features such as a koi pond, gazebo, back porch with swing and benches, and walking areas are frequently mentioned as attractive, though reviewers also note that the overall grounds are relatively small.

Apartment accommodations are portrayed as adequate for long-term living: one-bedroom units are called adequate/roomy enough, and come with a basic kitchenette (microwave and an apartment-sized refrigerator). A notable limitation that appears repeatedly is the lack of a stove or full kitchen in the apartments — reviewers explicitly mention “no stove” and describe kitchenettes as basic. Residents bring their own furniture, and the layout is described as easy to navigate; however, the building is three stories, which some might consider when evaluating mobility needs despite comments about accessibility support being available.

Management and ownership are viewed positively; several reviewers comment on good management, a privately owned (non-corporate) feel, and a positive opinion of ownership and leadership. Cleanliness and upkeep receive consistent praise, with maintenance cited as responsive (example: quick door lock repair). Reviewers also remark on the facility feeling welcoming to visitors, with nicely decorated lobbies and seasonal touches.

The most commonly mentioned concerns are limited and specific. The absence of a stove/full kitchen in units is the clearest downside cited repeatedly. Reviewers also note that rates have been rising, though they typically add that prices remain in line with comparable facilities and that the community represents good value. The outdoor grounds are described as small, which may matter to those seeking extensive outdoor space. Finally, the building’s three-story configuration is mentioned and could be a consideration for prospective residents with mobility constraints, even though many reviewers say the layout is easy to navigate and accessibility accommodations are provided.

In summary, the reviews portray Somerset Retirement Home and Assisted Living in Longview, WA as a clean, well-run, personable community with strong staff engagement, a robust activities program, good dining, and a range of amenities that support a home-like, active lifestyle for seniors. The primary trade-offs noted are basic in-unit kitchen facilities (no stove), modest outdoor grounds, and rising costs consistent with the market. For families prioritizing compassionate staff, active programming, cleanliness, and a closely-knit atmosphere, the facility comes highly recommended by multiple reviewers and long-term residents.
