    Good care with realistic expectations

I placed my mom here and overall I'm pleased. The staff are caring, professional, and quickly communicate changes - the DON is attentive, therapy is excellent (mom is walking and regained her fighting spirit), and the facility is clean with beautiful, well-manicured grounds, plenty of social areas and activities, and roomy, comfortable apartments. It's not a 5-star hotel - food is hit-or-miss, staffing can be stretched, and I've heard isolated reports of neglect and confusing front-desk/entry issues, so stay vigilant. I'd recommend this place for quality care and rehab, but go in with realistic expectations and stay involved in day-to-day care.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment: The reviews for Harbor Place at Cottesmore are largely positive, with a strong majority of reviewers praising the quality of care, the professionalism and compassion of staff, and the range of amenities and activities. Many families and residents explicitly recommend the facility, frequently noting standout rehabilitation services, warm staff-resident relationships, and attractive, well-kept grounds. However, a minority of reviews describe significant problems — including alleged neglect and inconsistent staffing — indicating variability in the resident experience.

Care quality and clinical services: A consistent theme is strong clinical and rehabilitative care. Multiple reviewers call out excellent physical, occupational, and speech therapy, with specific success stories (residents walking again, positive rehab outcomes). Nursing staff receive high marks for knowledge, professionalism, and pride in their work; the Director of Nursing is described as attentive and communicative. At the same time, there are several serious negative anecdotes involving missed care (e.g., not changing diapers, denied fluids, development of bedsores, coma/hospitalization) and at least one family raising concerns about end-of-life management. These more severe accounts appear less frequent but are significant, suggesting variability in oversight or staffing that can affect outcomes. Reviewers repeatedly note that staffing levels may vary and that being understaffed can contribute to lapses.

Staff, culture, and management: Many reviews emphasize an atmosphere in which staff treat residents like family: warm, inviting, ministering, and deeply caring. Communication and customer service are praised — reviewers mention quick updates, cordial tours, and a management team that responds. Positive comments about staff extend beyond nurses to include aides, activities coordinators, and support personnel. Conversely, there are reports of overworked or understaffed employees, and a few comments about rude front desk personnel. These mixed signals point to generally strong leadership and culture but also to occasional breakdowns in frontline staffing or training.

Facilities, amenities, and environment: Harbor Place is frequently described as clean, bright, and tastefully decorated with many common rooms and social spaces. Amenities noted across reviews include an indoor pool, jacuzzi, exercise room, billiards and activity rooms, library, and nicely kept outdoor grounds. Apartments are generally pleasant; some have balconies and full kitchens and are considered spacious, while other reviewers call apartments average. A few reviewers found the campus small or limited in outdoor walking variety, and others noted an unattractive exterior in spots. Overall the physical plant and grounds are a strong positive for most reviewers.

Dining and activities: The facility offers three meals daily and a broad activity calendar that includes arts and crafts, fitness classes (chair yoga, water aerobics), book clubs, and social events. Many reviewers praise the activities coordinator and the breadth of programming, saying residents are engaged and active. Opinions on food are mixed: several families praise the dining and top-notch food service, while others say the cafeteria is not inviting or that the food is merely "okay" and could be improved. There are occasional comments about cost (insurance copays, overall expense), though some saw value in the food (one mention of an inexpensive $5 lunch during rehab).

Safety, consistency, and notable concerns: The dominant pattern is one of high satisfaction, but a non-trivial minority of reviews report safety and quality failures that are serious (dehydration, incontinence mishandling, bedsores, hospitalization). These incidents often come with family distress and strong negative language. Several reviewers attribute problems to staffing shortages or inconsistent staff performance. The combination of overwhelmingly positive experiences and some severe negative outliers points to uneven consistency: many residents receive excellent care and enjoy the environment, while others have encountered lapses. Reviewers frequently recommend touring and speaking directly with management about staffing ratios, fall/skin-care protocols, admission procedures, and complaint-response policies before committing.

Bottom line: Harbor Place at Cottesmore is broadly well-regarded for its rehabilitation services, compassionate and professional staff, attractive and clean facility, and active programming. Many families are very satisfied and would recommend it. However, repeated mentions of variable staffing and a handful of serious neglect-related complaints suggest that prospective residents and families should verify current staffing levels, care protocols (especially for incontinence/skin care and hydration), and how the facility handles admissions and complaints. An in-person tour, conversations with the Director of Nursing, and questions about incident prevention and resolution are advisable to confirm the experience matches the many positive reports and to reduce the risk of encountering the less common but serious problems noted by some reviewers.

    About Harbor Place at Cottesmore

Harbor Place at Cottesmore sits in Gig Harbor, Washington, offering senior living right near the bay of Puget Sound, so there are nice outdoor spaces and even some waterfront dining, and the apartments come in studio, one-bedroom, or two-bedroom layouts, some with walk-in closets, balconies, patios, and private baths, which can feel like living in your own apartment, plus there are kitchens or kitchenettes if you like to cook at home, but they also do restaurant-style dining with kosher and vegetarian meals and private dining rooms for family get-togethers when you want it a bit more special. You'll find lots of extras like a heated indoor pool, a Jacuzzi, a fitness center, putting green, billiards room, beauty salon and spa, an on-site library, computer room, and a lounge for relaxing, while the outside has well-kept gardens and covered entries so you don't get wet when it rains, and parking is available for those who drive, plus there's free scheduled transportation for trips to the doctor, shopping, outings to museums, theaters, sporting events, or just getting around town.

They allow both dogs and cats as long as they're within weight limits, so pets are welcome, and residents often use the walking paths in the landscaped grounds. The senior community has independent living, assisted living, and even a memory care option and connects to skilled nursing and rehabilitation if you need it, so you don't have to move if your health needs change, which can be a big comfort, and staff are on duty around the clock with an emergency call system in every room, and the staff are praised for being caring and professional, although some reviews do mention a wish for better safety at entrances, but people seem happy with the general cleanliness. Health care services include help with medication management, diabetic care, incontinence care, non-ambulatory care, and high acuity needs, plus staffing and ancillary support if you need a little extra help from time to time, but you can also stay short-term for respite care if you're recovering or your family needs a break.

Leisure and wellness activities run all week, with social and educational programs, water aerobics, wellness classes, chapel services, field trips, and regular social gatherings arranged by the activities staff, so there's usually something to do if you're interested in being busy. There's a five-star safety rating for health safety and visitor management because of sign-in and screening technology, and the surroundings are generally praised for looking tidy and pleasant, with patios and lounges for sitting out in good weather. Harbor Place at Cottesmore is part of Century Park Associates, which focuses on independent and assisted living, and there's a monthly lease with no big buy-in fee, plus 40 retirement and 60 assisted living apartments, all looked after by friendly associates who are available 24/7 and under the direction of an Executive Director with a background in growth and operational excellence, so things usually run smoothly. The community has a score of 6.3 from reviews, which puts it in the middle with people liking the staff and activities but having some concerns about security.

Residents can expect weekly housekeeping, laundry service, on-site beauty and barber care, and both elevators and wheelchair accessible showers for those who need help getting around. There's also internet access throughout, indoor and outdoor common areas for social events, outings, and quiet space, and plenty of options for staying active, but of course, it's still up to every resident how much they want to get involved. Life here is about maintaining independence without daily home maintenance, with support nearby if you want it, and the setting is calm and comfortable, with staff ready to help but not overbearing. Apartments are arranged around manicured grounds, and there's a nice mix of privacy and social opportunities, so many residents settle in well here for an active or relaxed retirement, depending on what suits them best.
