    Clean facility but poor communication

I had a mixed but mostly negative experience. The building was extremely clean, rooms nice, and their rehab/therapists and gym were outstanding - some staff were upbeat and truly helpful - but overall service, bedside manner and communication were poor (phone staff even unaware of a COVID lockdown) and I had to advocate constantly. Meals were awful, cognitive testing and blood-pressure issues were delayed, and staff attitude sometimes felt uncaring or even aggressive; rehab activities weren't communicated well and assumptions about 24-hour care were made without discussion. After we moved my mom to Prestige she's doing great - more flexible dining and family access, staff went out of their way - I would not send anyone here unless you can closely oversee their care.

    Summary review

The reviews for Prestige Care & Rehabilitation - Clarkston display a highly polarized pattern: several reviewers praise the facility’s therapy, cleanliness, and pockets of caring, well-trained staff, while a substantial number of reviews call out serious shortcomings in clinical care, communication, dining, and consistency across the building.

Care quality and clinical issues: The comments reflect a wide disparity in perceived clinical care. Multiple families describe excellent, top-notch rehabilitation, naming the therapy program, therapists, and gym as among the best in town. Conversely, other reviewers reported substandard nursing care: minimal rehabilitation for some patients, inadequate cognitive testing, an early assumption that a resident needed 24-hour care, delayed recognition of high blood pressure, and in one case a family believed staff intended to worsen a resident’s condition. These reports suggest inconsistent clinical assessment and monitoring across residents and shifts. The serious nature of some complaints (delayed vitals recognition, alleged intent, and a reported death) warrants careful scrutiny and verification by prospective families.

Staff performance and communication: Staff evaluations are strongly mixed. Several reviewers describe staff who are upbeat, helpful, friendly, caring, and well trained, and who go out of their way to accommodate meals and visits. Other reviewers report negative attitudes, poor bedside manner, lack of empathy, and active communication failures. Recurrent themes include communication gaps between employees, phone staff being uninformed about important policies (for example, a COVID lockdown), and poor communication with families about care activities and progress. These contradictions indicate variability by unit, shift, or even individual staff members; consistent leadership and clearer protocols appear to be lacking according to reviewers.

Facilities and therapy environment: Praise for physical aspects of the facility is notable—some reviewers call the rooms nice, the facility extremely clean, and the therapy gym excellent. Rehabilitation receives the most positive and enthusiastic comments, with several families calling the therapists and gym the best in town. At the same time, reviewers point out that quality may vary by section: one area was specifically described as the worst part of the building, implying uneven maintenance, staffing, or leadership across different wings.

Dining and visitation: Dining experiences are another mixed area. Several reviewers complained about meal quality and specific examples (cold lunch meat sandwiches with potato chips; a fake cheese sandwich with apple juice), indicating dissatisfaction with standard meals. In contrast, other reviewers praised staff flexibility around dining and visits—staff accommodated special meal needs and family access, and dining flexibility was noted as a positive. Visitation policies and communication around visits seem inconsistent: while some families had ready access, others reported restrictions such as not being allowed to call and speak with a resident. COVID-related incidents and unclear lockdown communication contributed to visitation concerns for at least one visitor who became infected.

Patterns, risks, and recommendations for families: The dominant pattern is high variability—some residents receive outstanding rehab and experience compassionate, competent staff, while others experience lapses in basic care, communication, and meal quality. Important red flags in the reviews include delayed clinical response (high blood pressure), inadequate cognitive evaluations, frequent need for family advocacy, internal communication breakdowns, a COVID-related exposure incident, and at least one account of a negative outcome. Prospective residents and families should interpret the positive testimonials about therapy and cleanliness alongside the serious negative reports.

For anyone considering Prestige Care & Rehabilitation - Clarkston, recommended steps include: tour multiple sections of the building to check for consistency; meet nursing leadership and therapy staff to confirm rehab goals and daily therapy schedules; ask for staffing patterns by shift and evidence of cognitive and vital-sign monitoring protocols; discuss meal menus and options; clarify visiting and communication policies (including phone access to residents); and request references from recent families whose loved ones received similar levels of care. Given the polarized reviews, on-site evaluation and specific, documented agreements about care plans and communication expectations are essential before placement.
