    Beautiful, caring, high-end senior facility

I placed my mom at The Hermitage and I'm very pleased: a beautiful, well-kept, homey facility with caring, polite staff who residents to meals, excellent PT, lots of activities (bingo, music, Wii bowling, pizza parties), and varied, tasty food. It's high-end and pricey, the building is older with occasional breakdowns, and it wasn't suited for my brother's psychological needs (we did have one catheter/ER incident). Overall my mom loved it-clean, accommodating, exceeded expectations-10/10, I'd recommend it.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is strongly positive, with multiple reviewers emphasizing caring, attentive staff and a clean, attractive facility. Staff traits appear repeatedly: polite, friendly, welcoming, and helpful. Several comments single out nursing staff as kind and the employees as wonderful, with specific mentions of staff escorting residents to and from meals and accommodating individual needs (for example, an aunt’s needs were explicitly noted as met). One reviewer rated the place 10/10 and others said their family members loved the community, describing it as feeling like home.

Clinical and supportive care aspects are generally praised. Physical therapy is highlighted as excellent, and the facility is noted to accommodate frail residents. That said, there are limits mentioned: at least one reviewer indicated the community was not equipped to manage individuals with psychological or behavioral issues, and another review noted a catheter-related problem that led to an ER visit. These comments suggest the facility provides good standard skilled and supportive care, but may not be prepared for more complex psychiatric or acute medical needs in-house.

Facility and maintenance descriptions are somewhat mixed but lean positive. Multiple reviewers describe the Hermitage as beautiful, well-maintained, and homey with pleasant grounds. Maintenance responsiveness is called efficient in one summary, which aligns with the overall clean and well-kept character. However, there is a recurring note that the building is older and experiences frequent breakdowns. This creates a nuance: maintenance staff respond efficiently, yet the physical plant may present ongoing challenges due to age.

Dining receives generally favorable mentions — many reviewers comment on tasty foods, a good variety of meals, and the pleasant smell of food. One reviewer noted a particularly great meal, while another called the food decent, indicating some variability in dining experiences. Several reviews emphasize that staff escort residents to meals and that the dining experience exceeded expectations for some families, which is an important comfort factor for residents needing assistance.

Activities and social life are prominent strengths for many reviewers. A wide range of offerings is repeatedly cited: bingo, card games, Wii bowling, arts and crafts, music programs, pizza parties, resident choir, Sunday services, and even golf-related outings or nearby courses. These programmatic offerings contribute to resident engagement and were specifically mentioned as reasons why family members enjoyed the community. That said, at least one reviewer felt there was a lack of activities, indicating that program quality or availability may vary over time or by household wing.

Cost and clientele are another consistent theme. Several reviewers described the community as higher-end and expensive; at least one person said it was not suitable for their brother, which may reflect cost, match with care needs, or cultural fit. Conversely, one reviewer called the Hermitage an excellent value, so perceptions of cost-effectiveness vary by family circumstance.

In summary, the Hermitage Richmond presents as a clean, attractive, and well-run senior living community with notably caring and attentive staff, good therapy services, a broad set of social activities, and overall high resident satisfaction in many reports. Key strengths are staff responsiveness, physical therapy, a welcoming atmosphere, and on-site programming that supports engagement. Main concerns to weigh are the age of the building (with reported breakdowns), potential gaps in managing serious psychological or complex acute medical issues, occasional inconsistency in activities or dining experiences, and a higher cost/market positioning that may not fit every family. Prospective families should balance the strong personal care and activity programming against these operational and suitability considerations, and ask management specific questions about how psychological needs, emergency medical events, and building maintenance issues are handled before deciding.

    About Hermitage Richmond

Hermitage Richmond serves older adults starting at age 62 in a not-for-profit setting, and the place stands out for its range of services and flexible payment options, accepting private pay, Social Security, veteran's benefits, insurance, and long-term care insurance, and the rates depend on care needs, with no hefty entrance fee, rather monthly leases and some one-time community and respite charges, and folks always seem relieved by the straightforward structure of cottage and apartment rates, which start around 11310 for cottages, while Executive Director James Stovall oversees things. The living spaces include studios, one-bedrooms, two-bedrooms, some three-bedrooms, and semi-private layouts, and either way, there's always a choice between apartments, lovely cottages, or more traditional layouts, with private rooms as well, and you see a lot of activity around on the spacious front porch, in the grand parlor, indoor common spaces, and out in the gardens or on walking paths, which add a bit of elegance and comfort, while residents share communal meals in the dining room, enjoy vegetarian choices, and sometimes gather for lunch at the Cedar Grill.

Residents at Hermitage Richmond stay as care needs change, since the community supports aging in place and covers independent living, assisted living, skilled nursing, and memory support, and they even have a separate secured memory care area for folks needing a place to wander safely, and the staff can manage everything from elopement risks, behavior issues from memory loss, diabetic care with insulin, transfer help for non-ambulatory folks, and incontinence care. The staff are awake 24 hours a day, with nurses and a doctor on call, help with meds, and quick emergency response, and you see a good safety setup with a state-of-the-art emergency call and response system, building security, and pendants for peace of mind. Podiatrists, physical, speech, and occupational therapists all come in, offering services right in the facility, and they do weekly housekeeping and linen changes, so no one has to worry over the basics.

Meals are provided three times a day, with breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and there's a chapel, a spa, beautician services, full wheelchair-accessible showers and tubs, and plenty of outdoor and indoor spaces, so people stay comfortable and feel at home. You see a lot of programs going on, like exercise and water aerobics in the swimming pool, music, bridge, Bible study, trivia, choir, chair volleyball, and all sorts of arts, crafts, and games like Rummikub, dominoes, bingo, current events, scenic rides, birthday parties, shopping trips, gardening, and outings. Folks also sometimes visit museums, botanical gardens, live theatre, and take part in programs with students from local schools and colleges, which brings a bit of intergenerational fun, and it gives a real sense of life moving forward together. The community remains pet-friendly and lets residents smoke in designated outdoor spaces if they wish.

Transportation is flexible, with resident parking, shuttle services, complimentary rides, and paid transportation for appointments and outings, and the Pathways to Wellness program encourages healthy living through all sorts of enrichment activities, whether you want to relax or stay busy. Hermitage Richmond provides respite care, hospice services, and specialized Alzheimer's and dementia care, all with the aim of helping each resident live as independently as possible for as long as possible. Everything at Hermitage Richmond happens under the oversight of Pinnacle Living, keeping the focus on making the journey easier and more enjoyable, offering a blend of comfort, care, and practical help, and that's what stands out the most here-having enough freedom and support to suit whatever each person wants and needs, whether that means help with medication, a round of bingo, or a peaceful walk on the grounds.
