    Bright facility but staffing concerns

I toured this assisted-living and came away with mixed feelings. The building is immaculate, bright, and the staff I met were warm, attentive, and excellent clinically - the food (homemade desserts!) and dining were definite pluses and residents looked happy. That said, I heard frequent reports of staff turnover, management and staffing issues, slowed or missed care, reduced activities from COVID, and a busy multi-story location that may not suit everyone, so I'd only recommend it after verifying current staffing and care follow-through.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the reviews is mixed but leans positive about the physical facility, atmosphere, and many frontline staff, while showing significant and recurring concerns about staffing, management, and inconsistent care quality. Most reviewers praise the building itself: it is frequently described as bright, open, modern, and clean, with high ceilings and plenty of natural light. Apartments are often noted as roomy and comfortable, with tall ceilings and up-to-date furniture and in-room amenities such as refrigerators. Common areas like the library, patio, hobby rooms, game rooms, and theater are affirmatively mentioned, and several reviewers highlight recent remodels or brand-new sections that contribute to a resort-like, sunny atmosphere. Maintenance and cleanliness of the facility are commonly reported as good, with no deferred maintenance cited by many families.

Staff and day-to-day resident experience generate the strongest positive sentiment for a large number of reviews. Many visitors and families describe staff as friendly, warm, and attentive, with front-desk greeters who know residents by name and offer personalized tours. Several individual staff and directors are singled out for exceptional performance and responsiveness, including named administrators who improved operations, eased anxiety during moves, or followed through on concerns. Nursing and caregiving staff also receive repeated praise in many reviews for compassion, professionalism, and advocacy for residents. The community atmosphere is often called welcoming and home-like, and reviewers report active social life and residents who appear happy and engaged.

Dining and activities are areas with generally positive but variable feedback. Numerous reviewers appreciate the food, noting flavorful meals, homemade desserts, variety, flexible dining options, and chefs who accommodate dietary needs. Many amenities and activities are available — bingo, garden club, painting, outings, exercise programs, and transportation to local destinations are frequently mentioned. Reviewers also say activities are recovering after COVID and that there is a robust activity calendar. However, some families report the opposite experience: limited or insufficient activities for particular interests, only a single exercise class per week in some comments, and activity offerings that did not meet a specific resident's needs.

The most significant and recurring negative themes concern staffing levels, training, and management. Multiple reviews report short staffing, reliance on agency personnel, untrained or first-time caregivers, and caregivers refusing care, which in turn led to long waits for assistance. Several reviewers describe incidents that suggest neglect, such as residents left in dirty clothing, unbathed, or with dirty bedding; at least one review alleges a theft of money. There are also specific clinical concerns raised, including risk of dehydration and urinary tract infections due to inadequate monitoring or response. These issues are often tied by reviewers to leadership problems: complaints of unresponsive management, ignored reports to executives, harassment by managers, lack of disciplinary action after incidents, and a perceived decline in care after an ownership change. While some directors and managers receive high praise for responsiveness and improvements, the inconsistency in leadership performance is a clear pattern.

Other operational concerns appear intermittently: some reviewers find aspects of the facility layout poorly designed (limited outdoor walking space, small lobby, no large resident gathering room, confusing multi-story layout), and a handful criticize meal quality or describe dining room service as slow. Communication issues surface in reports of last-minute acceptance withdrawals, poor coordination at the front desk, and families feeling that business or money motives were prioritized. Pricing impressions vary: a number of reviewers say the value is good or that discounts are available, while others find the cost high relative to expectations.

In summary, Sellwood Senior Living receives strong, specific praise for its physical environment, many compassionate and personable staff members, and a lively, home-like community for many residents. At the same time, there are multiple and serious concerns about staffing stability, training, and management consistency that have led in some cases to substandard personal care and safety worries. The reviews suggest a polarized experience: families often encounter exceptional individual caregivers and a beautiful facility, but there are enough reports of neglect, poor leadership response, and operational lapses that prospective residents and families should investigate staffing models, incident response procedures, and recent ownership or leadership changes during tours. Specific questions to ask when evaluating the community would include current staff-to-resident ratios, agency staffing reliance, turnover rates, how incidents and complaints are tracked and resolved, examples of recent disciplinary or corrective actions, and confirmation of the types and frequency of activities and clinical supports available for the resident’s specific needs.
