    Exceptional Alzheimer's care, pricey, worth

I chose this place and I'm impressed - exceptional, kind and patient staff (the admin director stands out), high-quality Alzheimer's care, clean facility, lively activities, ocean view, and a well-kept exterior. Downsides: expensive, far, dated with small rooms, parking and a large, overwhelming lobby, plus spotty communication/privacy restrictions and occasional long waits; despite that, I think it's worth it and give it five stars.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is predominantly positive, with repeated praise for the staff, level of care, and the facility's setting, balanced by several consistent operational and logistical concerns. Many reviewers emphasize Surfside Manor's clean, well-maintained appearance and its attractive coastal location — noting an ocean view and fresh ocean air — which contributes strongly to the facility's appeal. The building is described as well-kept externally and clean internally, and management appears to be actively investing in updates and renovations, which reviewers said they were satisfied with.

Care quality and staff performance emerge as one of the strongest themes. Multiple reviewers singled out the administrative director as "amazing," "helpful," "kind," and "patient." Staff are frequently described as friendly, invested, and attentive; several reviewers specifically noted that employees knew residents' names and that residents and staff interact positively. The facility receives direct praise for high-quality Alzheimer's care, which is an important and specific endorsement for readers seeking memory-care services. Overall, reviewers rate services highly and some explicitly give 5-star or "two thumbs up" endorsements.

Despite strong staff praise, there are some mixed reports about individual interactions and communication. A few reviews mention standoffish staff members or instances of poor communication. Specific communication issues include privacy or policy restrictions limiting contact, reviewers finding themselves not on contact lists, and no callback being offered when requested. These patterns suggest that while many frontline staff are warm and engaged, administrative or procedural communication can be inconsistent and may cause frustration for families.

Facility and amenities present a mixed picture: reviewers appreciate the lounge area and generally functional rooms that "have everything," but also describe rooms as small and the building as not modern. Some reviews call the amenities "basic," and one reviewer explicitly mentioned the facility is dated. Positive notes include ongoing updates and renovations, which several reviewers were satisfied with; however, the overall impression is of a well-kept but older property that is being updated rather than a newly modernized campus.

Logistics and cost are important concerns raised across reviews. Several reviewers note parking difficulties and a large, somewhat overwhelming lobby or entrance area. Wait times (for admission or front-desk/service response) of around 30 minutes were reported in at least one summary. Cost is mentioned repeatedly as expensive, and location is described as far by some reviewers — though at least one commenter said the distance was "worth it." These practical considerations (parking, wait times, travel distance, and price) could be deciding factors for prospective residents and families even when clinical care and staff are highly rated.

Activities and resident engagement receive consistent positive mentions. Reviewers highlight arts and crafts, bingo, and general activity participation, noting that residents are seen doing activities and interacting with staff. This indicates an active programming schedule that contributes to resident well-being and community life.

Notably, dining quality is not mentioned in the provided summaries, so no conclusions can be drawn on meals or culinary services from these reviews. In summary, Surfside Manor appears to deliver high-quality, compassionate care—particularly for memory care—supported by an invested leadership and many friendly staff. The facility's appealing ocean-side setting, cleanliness, and activity offerings are strong positives. Prospective residents should, however, probe communication policies, confirm parking and visitor logistics, review up-to-date room layouts and amenities (since rooms are noted as small and basic), and clarify costs to ensure the location and operational details meet their needs.

    About Surfside Manor

Surfside Manor sits at 9502 Rockaway Beach Blvd in Rockaway Beach, NY, and gives seniors a place to live that feels safe, calm, and friendly, where the team helps each person based on what they need, whether that means help with getting around, managing medicine, or keeping in touch with family. The staff provides care twenty-four hours a day, and they're trained and kind, with doctors from top hospitals available for health problems, and nurses on site, plus workers who handle chores like cleaning, laundry, and making sure everyone gets healthy meals and snacks through a food program. There's help for getting to appointments and group trips, along with a packed calendar of games, events, and activities that are meant to get people moving, thinking, or just making friends, and residents can use the transportation if they need a ride. They have tele-health services so the doctor or nurse can check health without leaving the building, and everything from assisted living to nursing home care, short stays, long-term stays, rehabilitation, and specialized services for people needing more help with memory, plus someone to check on safety with electronic visit verification. The place is part of the Essential Senior Care network, so there's support for families who want extra information, people to talk to for advice, and web resources for learning about costs or other senior care guides, though they don't list prices directly but have a way to ask about cost or see reviews. Surfside Manor tries to be private and peaceful, letting residents enjoy a homelike space that's still modern, always with staff on hand and enough comforts to help folks live the way they want, whether that means joining in activities, relaxing with friends, or getting medical help. They use care plans to track who needs what, and follow rules and privacy policies, working with things like My Adult Foster Care, My Senior Care Hub, so families can find the right fit, making it easier for older adults to do well at home or in the community, with choices for home care, personal help, meals, and a safe secured environment.
