The School Sisters of Notre Dame in Mankato, Minnesota have undergone a significant transition as retired senior nuns have been moving out to an assisted living community in Shakopee since the first week of September. Sisters Lucille Matousek and Kathryn Schoolmeesters have been instrumental in aiding fellow sisters with their move, creating a bittersweet goodbye as they prepare to settle into their new home. The process of relocating sisters has been well-organized and efficient, with ten to twelve sisters departing each week and about 110 expected to be officially moved out by mid-November.
Despite the sadness of leaving, there is comfort in knowing that the sisters will all be together as a group in their new environment at the Benedictine Living Community in Shakopee. The transition has brought about moments of reflection and gratitude, with Sister Schoolmeesters mentioning how they have successfully navigated the challenges of the move. The sisters have found solace in the thought of being surrounded by familiar faces in their new community, emphasizing the importance of unity and companionship during this period of change.
While some sisters will remain in the Mankato area, around 25 in number, the legacy of the School Sisters of Notre Dame will continue to be felt within the community. Sister Matousek and Sister Schoolmeesters express hope that the Mankato community will continue to honor the impact made by the sisters in the field of education and beyond. With a focus on their spirit, love for the people, and the work they have accomplished over the years, the School Sisters of Notre Dame leave behind a lasting impression that will be cherished by those who have been touched by their presence.
