    Compassionate dementia care, comfortable home

My mom is happiest at Harbor - the staff are kind, compassionate, and genuinely know her (Dawn and Jan stand out), the care is dementia-friendly and respectful of her autonomy, and the owner's presence shows. Her room (private bath) is comfy, the beautifully remodeled dining area and outdoor spaces are clean and home-like, the food is great, visits feel safe and family-friendly - I highly recommend Harbor, though I'd like to see a few more resident activities.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment across the review summaries is strongly positive. Reviewers repeatedly praise the quality of care, the warmth and attentiveness of staff, and the facility's atmosphere. Multiple family members explicitly recommend Harbors Independent & Assisted Living, and several note that their loved ones are happy and comfortable living there. There is a consistent emphasis on a homelike, welcoming environment that sets this community apart from more institutional options.

Care quality and staff performance emerge as the most prominent strengths. Reviewers describe staff as friendly, wonderful, kind, compassionate, and willing to help. Several reviews highlight staff familiarity with residents—"staff know mom well"—and point to specific staff presence and leadership as meaningful: Dawn is mentioned as living on the wing, and Jan is credited with thoughtful leadership. The owner is reported to be present, which families appreciated. Dementia-friendly care is explicitly noted, and multiple accounts describe the staff as supportive during hard times, reinforcing a sense of safety and reliable care for vulnerable residents.

Facilities and atmosphere receive repeated praise. Residents and visitors describe comfortable rooms with private bathrooms, a spacious and clean dining area, attractive outdoor spaces, and a recent remodel that "looks great." The décor is characterized as beautiful and home-like, even "fairytale-like," and reviewers comment on a pleasant smell and overall aesthetic. Reviewers repeatedly note that the environment feels different from other facilities—more welcoming and personalized—contributing to a strong sense of resident well-being and family comfort.

Dining and food quality are other notable positives. Several reviewers specifically call the food "amazing," and the dining area is described as both spacious and clean. These comments suggest that meals are a meaningful part of the resident experience and are executed at a level that families appreciate.

Activities and engagement show a small area of mixed feedback. While a number of reviews mention numerous activities available to residents, at least one reviewer requested more resident activities, indicating variability in individual expectations or participation. This suggests that while programming exists and is a feature, the breadth, frequency, or appeal of activities may not meet every resident's desires and could be an area for incremental improvement or personalization.

Management and family experience are highlighted positively. The presence of leadership (owner and named staff leaders) and a family-friendly, safe visiting environment are repeatedly mentioned. Autonomy for residents is noted, implying that the community balances assistance with resident independence. Several family members emphasize feeling supported and reassured, and some specifically say they would "highly recommend" or that this is "the best place" for their loved one.

In summary, the reviews portray Harbors Independent & Assisted Living as a caring, well-maintained community with strong, attentive staff and leadership, comfortable private accommodations, good dining, and an appealing, home-like atmosphere. The dominant themes are compassionate, personalized care—especially for residents with dementia—positive resident mood, and strong family trust. The only recurring concern is a single mention of wanting more resident activities, which suggests a potential opportunity to expand or tailor programming to meet the interests of all residents. Overall, the pattern of comments supports a very favorable impression with specific strengths in staffing, management presence, environment, and food.

About Harbors Independent & Assisted Living

Harbors Independent & Assisted Living, also called The Harbor Senior Living, sits in East Tawas, Michigan, a historic town with nice views of Tawas Lake and Tawas Bay, and the building itself feels cozy with its vintage furnishings, so people who like a homelike environment might feel comfortable here. The facility offers both independent and assisted living for seniors, with just six assisted living units set up to work well for small groups, so everyone usually gets to know each other, and the friendly staff help with things like putting on clothes, spoon-feeding, bathing, medication, and moving around. There's support for people who use small mobility aids or have special needs, including Parkinson's or memory care challenges, and nurses and staff stay on-call 24/7 if anyone needs help in a hurry, which can make people feel a bit safer, especially with features like ADA-compliant bathrooms, emergency pull cords, and fall prevention tools in the apartments. The apartments come as private rooms for assisted living or one-bedroom units for independent living, and residents can choose shared living quarters if they like company, and there are washers and dryers for laundry, or staff can handle laundry and cleaning schedules.

A variety of activities and classes go on all week, like games, arts and crafts, fitness classes, and social events in the lounge or the games and entertainment room, and people can spend time in the large library if they want a quiet moment to read. There's a cafe snack area with all-day snacks, plus regular daily meals served three times a day, so people don't need to worry about cooking, and visitors can find parking onsite. The facility lets residents bring small pets and offers assistance within the community, so people who need a little help can still get around and join in. A wellness program runs alongside health assessments by an RN, and massage therapy may be available. They run specialty Alzheimer's care and respite stays when needed.

The Harbor is run by Harbor's Independent Living of East Tawas, Inc., and it holds an active State of Michigan license as an adult small group home, allowing six aged residents at a time. Residents can enjoy help with personal care, incontinence support, and safe, clean surroundings without worrying about the hassles of home maintenance, and the lively community encourages people to socialize and join activities, which helps create a positive, active lifestyle for seniors.
