About The Cambridge Homes

The Cambridge Homes is a trusted senior living community with a rich history of 135 years. This not-for-profit organization offers 44 independent and assisted living apartments to residents, along with a wide range of cultural, educational, wellness, and social programs. Located in an historic Georgian-style building on Mount Auburn Street near Harvard Square and Mount Auburn Hospital, The Cambridge Homes has preserved the exterior facade and interior architectural details to maintain the century-old building's historic character. Throughout the residence, antiques and fine art can be found, adding to the elegant ambiance of the community.

Residents of The Cambridge Homes enjoy a relaxed atmosphere, stimulating programs, and high-quality services. The community values inclusivity and respect for all individuals, as evidenced by their staff training in LGBTQ needs and identities. The Cambridge Homes has a strong tradition of service to local seniors, starting in 1887 when it was established by a group of caring individuals, including Alice Longfellow, the daughter of the poet Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. The current building was opened in 1899 by Charles William Eliot, president of Harvard University. Over the years, the residence expanded to include an infirmary and was renovated in 1997 to become an assisted living residence while maintaining its historic charm.

The Cambridge Homes is governed by an active Board of Directors and Incorporators who are dedicated to providing a gracious home and top-quality services to seniors in the community. To uphold the community's original charitable purpose, The Cambridge Homes also maintains an endowment fund to assist residents in need. The Active Friends’ Committee organizes various programs and social events to help residents stay connected to the larger Cambridge community. Overall, The Cambridge Homes offers a welcoming and caring environment where residents can lead independent lives while enjoying the benefits of living in a supportive community.
