    Friendly staff but inconsistent care

I have mixed feelings. Beth and many staff were loving, attentive, and the food and outings were excellent - the place felt small, safe, and family-like at times with flexible visiting and good mobility support. However care and staff quality were inconsistent: I saw sanitation lapses, neglected personal grooming, rude or disorganized staff, poor communication and record access, limited activities/services and parking, and some families removed loved ones - so I recommend a careful visit and asking about sanitation and communication before deciding.

    Summary review

The reviews for Somerset Assisted Living & Memory Care are strongly mixed, producing a polarized overall picture. A sizable portion of reviewers offer high praise: they describe a warm, family-like atmosphere led by a hands-on administrator (often named Beth) and a staff that is caring, attentive, and willing to go above and beyond. Positive accounts highlight engaging activities, flexible visiting (including being able to have lunch with residents), good to excellent food, clean and spacious living quarters, assistance with Medicaid and diabetic needs, and the ability to take residents on outings. Several families emphasize that their loved ones are content, safe, and well-supported, noting an accessible environment and staff who create a sense of fun and improved quality of life.

Contrasting sharply with those positives are multiple, serious negative reports that raise concerns about consistency of care and operational oversight. Several reviewers describe rude or disrespectful caregiver behavior, including staff yelling at residents and staff speaking ill of residents. There are repeated complaints about unsanitary food handling (specifically staff serving without gloves and not using napkins) and failures in basic personal care such as neglected toenail care. Facility-related issues include ongoing renovations, clutter and piles, and at least one comment about a dog living on-site, which contribute to perceptions that the physical environment can be in disrepair or poorly maintained. Some reviewers state they lack trust in staff, and at least one family removed a member from the facility.

Management and administrative issues are another recurring theme. While multiple reviewers praise the administrator for kindness and resourcefulness, other families report poor communication — missing billing receipts for six months, delayed or absent responses from management, and failures to provide records on request. Some complaints describe long waits to meet the director and an alarming comment describing the director as appearing disoriented. There are also reports of poor handling of serious events: families reported inadequate communication around injuries or elopements and a general negative impression of how such incidents were managed. These issues point to inconsistent administrative follow-through and recordkeeping.

Safety and regulatory concerns appear in multiple summaries and should not be overlooked. Beyond communication lapses, reviewers mention safety incidents (injuries, elopements) and at least one comment questioning the facility's license to provide care. The combination of alleged unsanitary practices, neglect of basic grooming, staff misconduct, and documentation problems creates a pattern that some families interpret as significant risk. Conversely, the strong positive reviews suggest that quality can be high under certain staff or shifts, indicating variability rather than uniform failure or success.

Taken together, the reviews indicate that Somerset can deliver excellent, compassionate care and a warm environment for some residents, largely credited to particular staff members and leadership that some families find exceptional. At the same time, multiple independent reports of poor hygiene practices, inconsistent personal care, disrespectful staff conduct, facility maintenance issues, and problematic management communications represent substantive concerns. Prospective families should weigh these conflicting reports carefully: visit multiple times across different days and shifts, observe meal service and staff-resident interactions, ask for documentation (licenses, incident reports, receipts), speak directly with current families about consistency, and clarify policies on staffing, communication, and handling of incidents. The facility appears capable of high-quality care in many cases, but the variability and recurring administrative and safety complaints warrant thorough due diligence before making a placement decision.
