    Caring staff but dangerous management

I have a very mixed, mostly negative experience. The caregivers and many staff were warm, helpful, and ran engaging activities in bright, homey spaces, and the place is affordable - but management was unprofessional and unresponsive: Ms. Allison broke promises, ignored calls and medical-records and visitation requests. I saw safety and cleanliness problems (stained carpets, bad odors, roaches, unexplained injuries, theft) and my mother died of COVID in the facility; we're now involved legally. If you want low cost and caring frontline staff, it may work, but beware serious management, safety, and communication issues.

    Summary review

Overall impression: Reviews for The Residence at Pompano Beach are highly polarized, with a substantial number of families and residents praising staff, activities, and certain amenities, while a separate and vocal group describes serious safety, cleanliness, and management failures. Many reviewers emphasize heartfelt, attentive caregivers who create a warm, home-like atmosphere and strong memory-care programming. At the same time, multiple reviewers report very troubling incidents—such as theft, alleged abuse, pest infestations, unexplained injuries, and financial mishandling—that raise substantial safety and trust concerns.

Care quality and staff: A dominant positive theme across many reviews is the compassion and dedication of direct-care staff. Names such as Petrona, Johane, Amy and others are repeatedly mentioned as exemplary caregivers who are patient, creative, and go beyond basic duties to engage residents. Families frequently remark that caregivers are attentive, respond quickly to needs, and create meaningful activities that improve residents' well-being. Several reviewers also report smooth admissions and transition experiences where staff provided clear explanations and emotional support. Conversely, another cluster of reviews reports severe problems with staff behavior and competence—ranging from dismissive attitudes and poor communication to allegations of physical abuse and negligent care. There are recurring complaints of unreturned calls, ignored medical concerns, and inconsistent staffing levels that leave families feeling unsupported.

Facilities and maintenance: Many reviewers describe the facility as bright, cheery, and well-appointed, noting large open living and dining areas, a beautiful courtyard, water fountain, and pleasant communal spaces including libraries and TV rooms. Housekeeping receives praise in several reviews, and some families say there is a pleasant smell and clean kitchen. However, other reviewers report disturbing conditions such as stained carpets, dirty grounds, pest infestations (roaches and fleas), cats in dining areas, and rooms with paint peeling, broken furniture, and nonworking fixtures. Memory-care sections are described in two opposing lights: as an area with meaningful programming and patient staff, but also as needing updates and serious TLC. These conflicting reports suggest variability by unit, wing, or time period.

Activities and engagement: The Residence receives consistent positive marks for its activities program from many families. Reported offerings include themed celebrations (Caribbean day with steel drums), live music, weekend games, barbecues, crafts, memory games, exercise programs, movies, and outings. Memory-care residents are noted to benefit from structured activities, creative programming, and one-on-one engagement. These programs are repeatedly cited as delivering quality-of-life benefits and fostering a sense of community.

Dining and services: Comments about food are mixed. Several reviewers praise an in-house chef, good meal presentation, and dietitian guidance, while others call the food "horrible." Additional services people noted include transportation for shopping and outings, on-site physical therapy, salon services, and 24-hour care. Some families appreciate affordable pricing and perceive the facility as offering good value, whereas others report concerning issues such as money mishandling.

Management, communication, and safety: Management and communication are a major fracture point in the reviews. Positive accounts mention helpful, professional admissions and management staff who explain processes clearly and handle logistics well. Negative accounts, however, allege broken promises (for example, visitation hours not honored), poor follow-up, failure to return calls, and ignored medical records or requests. Serious safety allegations appear multiple times: theft of personal items (rings, clothing), staff access to resident belongings, unexplained injuries, and even accusations of abusive behavior by nurses. There are also mentions of a COVID-related death and legal involvement by families. Some reviewers indicate that improvement efforts are underway—new administration (Patricia) and construction/renovation—but others feel changes are insufficient or too slow.

Patterns and consistency: The most notable pattern is inconsistency. Many reviewers describe excellent, compassionate care and well-run programming; an almost equal number describe neglect, unsanitary conditions, and unprofessional behavior. This polarity suggests variable quality that may depend on which staff are on duty, which unit a resident is in (memory care vs general assisted living), management turnover, or intermittent operational problems (staffing shortages, construction disruptions). Several reviews explicitly state "you get what you pay for," reflecting the perception among some that affordability correlates with lower standards, while others insist the facility is ‘‘one of the best’’ and highly recommend it.

Actionable considerations for families: Based on recurring themes in the reviews, families should conduct careful, specific due diligence before choosing this facility. Recommended checks include: touring multiple units at different times of day, asking about pest-control records and sanitation protocols, verifying staffing ratios and turnover, requesting references from current families (especially memory-care families), asking how personal belongings and valuables are secured, reviewing incident and complaint records (including any reports to regulatory bodies), confirming communication protocols for medical updates and emergencies, and inquiring about recent management changes and outcomes from any renovations or corrective plans. Given the theft and abuse allegations, families should also ask about background checks, key-control policies, and oversight mechanisms.

Conclusion: The Residence at Pompano Beach presents a split picture. It can deliver compassionate, engaging memory-care and assisted living with attentive staff, vibrant activities, and pleasant communal spaces. However, multiple reviews report severe and potentially dangerous lapses in safety, cleanliness, management responsiveness, and maintenance. These conflicting reports call for cautious, evidence-based evaluation by prospective residents and families: if the positive aspects are present for your loved one, the facility may be a good value; but the negative allegations are serious enough that they warrant thorough investigation before admission.
