    Compassionate staff, costly deposit issues

I appreciated the phenomenal, family-like staff - friendly, caring, responsive and truly compassionate - and the homey, very clean small facility with on-site salon, bingo, chair exercises and regular events. My experience was mixed: it's expensive, I felt pressure from owner Dina to pay a large non-refundable upfront amount and my refund wasn't honored, and at times the place felt more like hospice and wasn't right for my mom. Overall the care and leadership (Dina and Ted, 25+ years) are heartfelt and life-changing for some, but weigh the cost and deposit terms carefully.

    Summary review

Overall sentiment in the reviews is broadly positive about the quality of hands-on care, facility atmosphere, and the emotional warmth provided by staff, with important caveats around pricing and certain administrative practices. Multiple reviewers emphasize that the staff are friendly, caring, and responsive; they describe the caregiving team as family-like and deeply invested in residents’ well-being. Several accounts are strongly favorable — calling the staff phenomenal, life-changing for the family, and noting that the home provides the most complete, compassionate senior care. Leadership is also highlighted positively: owners Dina and Ted are described as experienced (25+ years), heartfelt, and leading an operation that is reinventing itself for the better and motivated by the right reasons.

Care quality and staff culture emerge as the strongest themes. Reviews repeatedly note personalized attention, emotional warmth, and staff involvement beyond routine care (for example, attending family gatherings). The small size and home-like model contribute to a family atmosphere that reviewers found meaningful: caregivers are described as friendly and attentive, and several reviewers say staff positively impacted both the resident’s life and the family’s experience. Multiple testimonials present the facility as responsive to questions and capable of providing heartfelt, individualized support.

Facility and programming receive consistent praise. The property is described as very clean and updated, with a small, homelike scale. On-site amenities such as a salon are mentioned, and activities like bingo, chair exercises, parties, and events are regularly cited, suggesting an active social program appropriate to an assisted living model. This combination of cleanliness, updated living space, and organized activities reinforces the perception of a nurturing, well-maintained environment.

However, there are notable and recurring concerns around cost and administrative/financial practices. Several reviewers reported expensive pricing, large upfront rent requirements, and pressure from the owner (specifically named as Dina) to place significant deposits. A particular complaint is a non-refundable first-month rent and at least one report that a promised refund was not honored. These issues create a clear pattern of risk around move-in terms and financial transparency for prospective residents and families. Reviewers were split on value: while some explicitly called the placement good value for money given the quality of care, others felt the cost and deposit practices were harder to justify.

There are also mixed impressions about clinical suitability. While many found the environment life-affirming and appropriate, at least one reviewer felt the setting was hospice-like and not suitable for their loved one, indicating that the facility’s model and level of care may not match every resident’s needs. Given the small, home-style assisted living approach, this suggests a potential mismatch for residents requiring different levels of medical or rehabilitative services.

In summary, reviewers consistently praise the compassionate, family-oriented staff, the experienced leadership, and the clean, activity-rich home environment. These strengths make Upon the Rock stand out for families seeking a small, personalized assisted living setting. At the same time, there are significant and specific concerns about upfront costs, deposit pressure, and at least one instance of a refund dispute. Prospective residents should weigh the strong testimonials about staff and care against the financial and administrative red flags and verify contract terms and refund policies before committing.
